Carvell Copeland has built his baseball reputation around
his speed...He has built his off-the-field reputation around being a good
citizen, volunteer, leader and ambassador for North Carolina A&T State
University and its athletics department...First-year head coach Joel Sanchez will
use Copeland's considerable athletic skills in the outfield as well as on the
basepaths...Copeland has a career .261 average in 88 career games played...He also
has seven doubles, two triples, 26 stolen bases and 16 RBI during his career...Has
a strong arm, being credited with 111 putouts and just one error for a .992 fielding
percentage last season...Has an excellent academic background at A&T...Has been
named to the Dean's List and has been recognized as an A&T scholar athlete
since his arrival...Garnered MEAC All-Academic Team honors from 2009-present...Serves
as the MEAC Student-Athlete representative on the National NCAA Division I
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee...He is also t he treasurer of A&T's SAAC.
2011 Season: Batted
.290 with four doubles, two triples, 10 RBI and 35 runs scored...Stole 18 bases,
walked 12 times, and struck out 24 times in 48 games...Ranked second in the MEAC
and first on the team in stolen bases...Had a season-long nine-game hitting
streak from Feb. 26-March 9...Went 4-for-6 with a run scored on April 1 against
Villanova...Went 4-for-4 with a season-high two RBI and a run scored on April 24
in the second game of a doubleheader against Longwood...Scored a season-high four
runs on May 14 at Savannah State...Tripled in back-to-back games on Feb. 26 and
27 against New Jersey Institute of Technology.
2010 Season: Played
in 23 games and posted a .204 average with three doubles, five RBI and 15
runs...Stole four bases, had four walks and eight strikeouts...Had a season-high
two-hit game on April 14 against Gardner-Webb...Scored a season-high three runs
on March 13 at N.C. Central...Had an RBI in three consecutive games from April 3-14...Posted
as season-long hitting streak of three games from March 13-16.
2009 Season: As a
freshman, Copeland hit .188 with an RBI and three runs in 17 games...He stole
four bases, had one walk and seven strikeouts...His best game was on April 1 against
Wofford, when he went 2-for-3 with a run scored...Had a four-game hitting streak
from Feb. 20-March 5.
High School: At
Orange High School, Copeland was the a member of the 2008 North Carolina 2A
State Champions team, and was the MVP of the N.C. State Championship series and
was named to the N.C. All-State Team in 2008...He was selected to the All-Mid-State
in 2007 and '08...Named Mr. Panther Baseball in 2008 and earned the Most
Dedicated Award in '06 and the Coach's Award in Basketball in '05...Made the
Principal's List from 2004-08, and was a Scholar Athlete during the same period...Named
a North Carolina Scholar in 2008...Joined the National Achiever's Association and
competed in basketball and cross country.
Personal: Full
name is Carvell M. Copeland...He is the son of Hollin and Lela Copeland...Was born
on April 17, 1990 and has two siblings, Aisha and Jamila...Majors in sports science
and leisure studies... He is the Treasurer for the Phi Epsilon Kappa Honors
Fraternity...Enjoys fishing, hunting and working with cars and motorcycles...Spent
the 2011 summer competing with a wooden bat, as he played for the Asheboro
Copperheads of the Coastal Plains League...Most proud of maintaining good grades
throughout his collegiate career, competing with the baseball team and being
active in representing his university on a conference and national level with
his work with the SAAC.
