BROWN SUMMIT, N.C. – North Carolina A&T women's golfer Tori Mouton, a freshman, led the Aggies as she finished in a three-way tie for 14th at A&T's Aggie Invitational thanks to a third-round 5-over 77 on the par-72, 6,323-yard Bryan Park Players Course Tuesday.
The Aggies hosted the five-team tournament starting Monday with 36 holes over two rounds before concluding Saturday with an 18-hole third round. A&T finished the tournament with a 64-over 928, while Western Carolina won the tournament after shooting a 16-under 848 and a third-round 4-under 284. Appalachian State placed second 53 shots off the lead with a 37-over 901.
Western Carolina's Madison Isaacson individually won the tournament by carding a 10-under 206 and a third-round 5-under 67. Four of her teammates finished in the top-5 in Elizabeth Lohbauer (3-under, 213), Brielle Mapanao (2-under, 214), Kayleigh Baker (1-over, 217) and Kaitlyn Wingnean (6-over 222).
Mouton finished with a two-day score of 12-over par 228.
Mouton started with three pars on the back nine but triple-bogeyed the par 4, 380-yard 13th. She bounced back with a birdie on the next hole, a 488-yard par-5, and finished the back nine with four consecutive pars. Mouton began the front nine with a birdie on the par 4, 389-yard first hole before a par, bogey and birdie over the next three holes. She finished the final five holes 4-over.
"Today, I tried to stay calm because yesterday I stayed calm, and it worked," Mouton said. "I tried to stay calm and focus on my game plan, and it paid off. I had a couple of holes that could have been better. I learned from my mistakes in this tournament, and I hope to play better in the next one."
Kennedi Lee tied for 17th after shooting 81 in the final round and a 15-over 231 for the tournament. Lee recorded two birdies on the back nine, first at the par 5, 498-yard 12th and then at the par-3, 167-yard 17th.
Senior Jayla Rogers finished two strokes behind Lee after a 5-over 77 in the final round. She shot a 17-over 233 for the tournament, ending in a tie for 19th. She recorded back-to-back birdies on the first and second holes.
Sophomore Vileska Gelpi finished three strokes behind Rogers after a 7-over 79 in the final round, and senior Kiaira Porter recorded an 83 in the final round. The Aggies continue the season in Kitty Hawk, N.C., for the Outer Banks Intercollegiate from Oct. 8-9 at the Duck Wood Country Club.
