MORGANTON, NC — Senior women's golf standout
Ekaterina Prokhorova missed extending her top-10 streak by one stroke, carding a 12-over 80-74-74—228 to tie for 12th at Appalachian State University's Mimosa Invitational on the par-72, 6,274-yard Mimosa Hills Golf Club course.
This marks her first finish outside of the top five this season, snapping a seven-tournament streak. Had she finished among the top 10, it would have furthered her streak to eight straight top-10 finishes. The Mimosa Invitational was a two-day, three-round tournament that started on Monday and concluded on Tuesday.
Appalachian State finished in second place in its tournament after a 301-305-301—907 performance, a single stroke behind the tournament winners, Charlotte, who put together a 298-303-305—906. Longwood rounded out the top three of the leaderboard, just one stroke behind the Mountaineers at 44-over 908. The Aggies finished seventh after significantly improving from a 69-over-645 first day to a 13-over 301 second day for an 82-over 946, edging Gardner-Webb by just one stroke.
An 8-over 80 opening round, marked by seven bogeys and a double bogey, put Prokhorova in the middle of the pack on Monday. Her push came early in the second round, starting with a par on the par-3 177-yard ninth hole. She kept a clean card on the back nine, highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 465-yard 12th. Despite saving a shot to close the round, a pair of bogeys on holes two and three added to a double bogey on the par-3 165-yard sixth to land Prokhorova 2-over par.
Prokhorova stayed consistent for the final round, opening with a three on the par-3 191-yard 13th, a four on the par-5 466-yard 14th, and a pair of pars before running into a bogey on 17. She quickly regained rhythm with a stretch of pars and managed a birdie on hole seven, but took extra swings on holes five, six, and 12 en route to another 2-over 74.
Though she narrowly missed the top 10, Prokhorova's final two rounds boosted her five places up the leaderboard.
