CHARLOTTE – Women's golf has started in Aggieland.

The North Carolina Agriculture & Technical State University women's golfers started their season on Monday by playing two rounds at the par-72, 6,136-yard Quail Hollow Country Club hosted by Charlotte.  The Aggies placed sixth with a score of (39-57) 96-over 240. Freshman Macy Garth had the lowest two-round score for the Aggies, playing as an individual separate from the team score. Garth shot a two-round 17-over 161 to finish in a three-way tie for 20^th.

Senior Sofia Fernando had the lowest score among the ones counted toward A&T's totals. She shot a (77-85) 18-over 162 to place 24th, followed by sophomore Division I transfer  Morgan Rodriguez's (80-86) 22-over 166 to place 28^th. Charlotte's Pinky Chasilprungruang won the tournament by shooting 1-under 143, followed by Charleston's Molly Hardwick (146) and Appalachian State's Alisa Pressley (146), who finished in a tie for second place.

Charleston won the six-team tournament by shooting an 11-over 155, finishing eight strokes ahead of Charlotte.

After three bogeys on the back nine to start her career, Garth recorded her first collegiate birdie by sinking a birdie putt on the par-5, 478-yard No. 1. The rest of her front nine included four bogeys, a triple bogey, and three par putts before she started her second round on the par-5, 507-yard 10^th.

She bogeyed 10, parred 11, bogeyed 12, and double-bogeyed 13 before moving to the positive side by dropping a birdie putt on the 297-yard 14^th to move to 3-over for the round. She closed out the back nine of the second round at 5-over, then went through the front nine without a birdie, shooting 3-over on the front to close out the tournament.

Fernando had a solid first round. A birdie on the par-5, 477-yard 15^th helped her finish the back nine at 2-over. She made the turn and became super consistent, dropping six straight par putts to remain at 2-over before running into trouble on the par-5, seventh, where she carded a six.

A double bogey followed, ending her first round at 5-over. Fernando started her second round on the 10^th and recorded her second birdie of the tournament on the 14^th. She made the turn at 5-over for the round and shot 8-over on the front nine. Rodriguez made her first career birdie as an A&T Aggie on the 15^th and completed her first nine holes at 3-over.

After making the turn to the front nine, she made five pars, three bogeys, and a double bogey to finish the round with an 80. She made two birdies on the front nine, including a three on the par-4, 335-yard eighth, and also made a birdie on 15. Freshman Janiya Brown and junior Mia Truong finished in a three-way tie for 31^st (172). Senior Meeya Marquez shot a 186.

The Aggies will continue their season at the Folds of Honor Collegiate Tournament in East Lansing, Mich., Sept. 7-9. Five days later, they will play in the annual Elon Invitational (Sept. 14-16) at Alamance Country Club.

In October, the Aggies will return to Cary, NC, for the annual SAS HBCU Invitational (Oct. 17-18) at Prestonwood Country Club. The Aggies are the defending SAS HBCU Invitational champions. Later in the month, from Oct. 23-25, the Aggies will play in USC Upstate's Fripp Island Intercollegiate in St. Helena Island, SC.

A&T opens the spring semester in Vero Beach, Fla., for the three-day Treasure Coast Invitational, Feb. 7-9. Another HBCU tournament follows with the Arcis HBCU tournament (Feb. 21-22) in Weston, Fla. UNC Wilmington will host the River Landing Classic March 1-2 before the Aggies will play in N.C. State's City of Oaks Collegiate in Weston, Fla., March 21-22. A week later, Appalachian State will host the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, NC.

The Aggies will close out the regular season at the University of North Carolina's Carolina Challenge Cup on April 4. Two weeks later, they will compete for a conference championship at the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship Women's Golf Tournament (April 18-20) in Southport, NC.

"Every season brings a new opportunity," said second-year director of golf Mesha Levister, who was named HBCU Women's Golf Coach of the Year by The Black College Coaches Association (BCGCA) and the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) last season.
