BURLINGTON, NC – After two rounds of the Elon Women's Invitational, freshman North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University golfer
Macy Garth is in the top 10 with a 2-over-par 144 at the par-71, 6,225-yard Alamance Country Club.
Garth and the Aggies are in sixth place after Monday's two rounds. The Aggies shot 294-296 – 590 and trail fellow Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) member William & Mary by four shots. The Tribe shot 586. Host Elon, another CAA member, leads the tournament with a 3-over 571.
Wofford and fellow HBCU Howard University are tied for second at 14-over 582. Garth is six shots off the lead behind clubhouse leader Elsa Maren Steinarsdottir of Western Carolina. Steinarsdottir shot a two-round 4-under 138 to lead Elon's Lilli Downer by two shots (140). Howard's Paris Fieldings rounds out the top three with a 1-under 141.
Sophomore
Morgan Rodriguez finds herself in the top 20 after Day 1. Rodriguez shot 5-over 71-74 (145) and will enter the third and final round on Tuesday in a three-way tie for 18
th place. Rodriguez's teammate, Garth, started her round on the par-4, 371-yard seventh, parring her first two holes before bogeying No. 9.
Garth carded another bogey on No. 12 before earning her first birdie on the par-4, 356-yard 13
th. After two more bogeys on the back nine, she made the turn at 3-over. She finished strong, birdieing the par-4, 355-yard second and the par-3, 154-yard fourth to close the first round with a 71.
Her second round was almost flawless. Garth carded 17 pars, with her only bogey coming on the par-4, 382-yard 15
th. Rodriguez had a steady first round, starting on the seventh and parring the first four holes before bogeying No. 11. After two more pars, she birdied the par-3, 195-yard 14
th before a bogey on 15 moved her back to 1-over in Round 1.
After the bogey, Rodriguez recorded nine straight pars to close the first round with a 72. In the second round, she bogeyed four of her first eight holes. She then made eight straight pars to reach the par-4, 395-yard fifth at 4-over for the round. She bogeyed five before posting a birdie on the par-5, 470-yard sixth to end the round.
Junior
Mia Truong had some highlights over the first two rounds of the Elon Women's Invitational. She is in a five-way tie for 30
th after shooting 8-over 75-75 (150). Truong had two birdies in the first round, a three on the par-4, 376-yard third, and a four on the par-5 sixth. She also birdied No. 3 and No. 6 in the second round in addition to birdies on the seventh and 13
th.
Senior
Sofia Fernando also competed on Monday. She shot 77 in the first round, making three birdie putts. She shot 74 in the second round, with birdies on No. 6 and No. 13. Fernando finished at 9-over 151. Freshman
Janiya Brown shot 75-79 – 154. Senior
Meeya Marquez (160) and freshman
Sophia Bullard (162) played as individuals.
The final day of the Elon Women's Invitational starts at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
