BELMONT, N.C. – North Carolina A&T secured its second straight men's tennis win on Tuesday with a 7-0 win over Belmont Abbey 7-0 at the Reidy Tennis Center.
Junior Esteban Lopez continued the great start to his season. He improved to 3-3 on the season with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) win over Belmont Abbey's Jai Rowe at No. 1 singles.
Lopez also helped the Aggies take the doubles point. He teamed with senior Vasil Ivanov to beat the Crusaders duo of Renzo Fassioli and Matthew Orozco, 6-1. Lopez and Ivanov bounced back from their Sunday loss to Shaw to improve to 2-4 as a duo in 2022.
The Aggies won all three doubles matches. Freshmen Eder Blanco and Jorge Perez defeated Elijah Buerkle and Julian Gonzalez, 6-1 at No. 2. At No. 3, freshman Ian Pedersen and senior Nolan Martino beat Marco Garofalo and Alex Crabtree, 6-2.
Martino translated his doubles success to the singles competition as he claimed victory at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Dean Zoglio. It was the 10th singles win of Martino's career.
Ivanov also added to his career victory total. He now has career win No. 21 after defeating Orozco, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. But as Martino and Ivanov's respective careers are nearing an end, they are leaving the program in good hands.
Blanco is now 3-3 in his first season with the Aggies after he blanked Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Perez downed Buerkle 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. It was his second straight win. Another first-year Aggie, Pedersen, won at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-5, over Marco Garofalo.
The Aggies will look for their third straight win when they travel to Bristol, Tenn., to face King University at 1 p.m., Friday, March 4.
