WILMINGTON, NC/ATHENS, Tenn. – The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University men's tennis team kick-started its fall tournament season over the weekend with major success.
The Aggies produced one tournament winner and two finalists between the Tennessee Wesleyan University (TWU) and UNC Wilmington tournaments. North Carolina A&T director of tennis Dejon Bivens said his team's strides are impressive, and the weekend gave him a glimpse of what A&T is building.

Junior Jindrich Brill won his bracket at TWU, beginning with a win over TWU's Nicolas Cortes Campo. Brill then faced sophomore teammate Nathan Halahija and advanced to the finals. He claimed the title in three sets over TWU's Lucca Guercio. Halahija beat TWU's Maceo Simpson in the first round.

"Brill's championship run was special," said Bivens. "To battle through that field and win the title against an opponent playing at an extremely high level in the finals says a lot about the work he has put in, and where his game is right now."

In Wilmington, the Aggies also had strong showings. Senior standout Mathieu Dussaubat led the way in Flight B2, opening with a first-round win over Queens University of Charlotte's Gavin Ryan before defeating UNCW's Augie Ballantine in straight sets.

Dussaubat then lost to UNC Greensboro's Gabriel Goody in a three-set thriller for the Flight B2 title. Yonathan Sagiv also impressed, beating Presbyterian's Tom Oliver in straight sets in his Flight 2 first-round match before defeating UNCW's Alejandro Pena in three sets after dropping the first set.

In the final, Sagiv battled another three sets before losing to UNCW's Gabriel Jacquemin. Sagiv also partnered with John Collidor during the Flight A doubles, but lost to UNCW's Alex Degabriele and Tomas Marin. While Bivens coached in Tennessee, his assistant Jahanzeb Inam led the group in Wilmington.

"With our team competing in two different places, he made sure those guys were prepared and had everything they needed to compete," Bivens said. "What excites me is that we had guys in two different places representing A&T and showing that this program is moving forward."

The Aggies still have work to do before the part of their season when a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) championship is on the line in the spring. They still have fall tournaments at North Carolina State University and Wake Forest, along with ITA regionals in South Carolina.
