Stutts Has Success In First Collegiate Tournament

Victoria Stutts finishes in third-place tie at Outer Banks Intercollegiate tournament.

KITTY HAWK, N.C. – North Carolina A&T freshman Victoria Stutts, playing in her first collegiate women's golf tournament, finished in a tie for third at the two-day, three-round Outer Banks Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,148-yard Duck Woods Country Club.

On Sunday, A&T shot a 34-over 322 to finish the tournament at 113-over 977 as the Aggies finished second behind the Naval Academy, who won the tournament by shooting a three-round 68-over 932. The Aggies finished four shots ahead of Mount St. Mary's, who shot 981 for the tournament.

Stutts tied for the lowest third-round score with a 75 to move up three spots from her sixth-place finish from Saturday to end the tournament with a score of 20-over 236. She finished five shots off the lead behind Navy's Mara Hirtle, who won the tournament as an individual at 15-over 231 after shooting three straight 77s. Hirtle's teammate finished second at 16-over 232. Meanwhile, Stutts finished in a tie with Navy's Stephanie Lee.

Stutts started at No. 1 on the front nine. She parred her first five holes of the day before running into trouble for the first time as she tripled bogey the par-4 sixth. Other than that hiccup, she was consistently good on Sunday. Two holes after the triple, she secured her first career birdie with a two on the par-3, 159-yard eighth. She remained at 2-over for her round until she reached the par-5, 537-yard 14th, where she carded another birdie. She did bogey the 16th and 17th to finish the back nine at 1-over.

Sophomore Vileska Gelpi finished eighth with a three-round score of 28-over after shooting a third-round 11-over 83. She posted two birdies on the day and four for the tournament. Sophomore Kennedi Lee also placed in the top-10 by shooting a 30-over 246 over two days. She shot an 81 on Sunday, and her third round included one birdie.

Senior Kiaira Porter moved up three spots to finish tied for 14th, along with freshman teammate Tori Mouton with a 42-over par 258. A&T continues the season with The Chippewa Invitational from October 17-18 in Birmingham, Mich.
