KITTY HAWK, N.C. – Three North Carolina A&T women's golfers are in the top-10 after the first day and first two rounds of the Outer Banks Intercollegiate at the par-72 6,148-yard Duck Woods Country Club on Saturday.
The Aggies are in second place after 36 holes, shooting a 79-over 655. They are 33 shots off the lead after Navy fired off a 46-over 622. A&T leads third-place Mount St. Mary's by four shots after The Mount carded a 659.
Sophomore Vileska Gelpi and freshman Victoria Stutts lead the Aggies after a two-round 17-over 161 as the Aggie duo is in a four-way tie for sixth place. Gelpi and Stutts are seven strokes off the lead behind Navy's Mara Hirtle, who stands at 10-over 154.
Two of her teammates are in second and third, respectively, in Jenna Hann (13-over, 157) and Stephanie Lee (14-over, 158). Mount Saint Mary's Erika Cui (15-over, 159) and Navy's Sue Lee (16-over, 160) round out the top-5. Meanwhile, Division I transfer Kennedi Lee is in 10th place after shooting a 21-over 165.
Gelpi recorded an 86 in the first round but bounced with a 3-over 75 in the second for the second-best score of the round. Gelpi's second round included shooting 2-under on the front nine. She scored twice on the front nine with a birdie on the par-4, 336-yard fifth and another on the par-5, 489-yard seventh. She had three bogeys and a double on the back nine.
Stutts posted an 82 in the first round and a 79 in the second. Stutts, playing in her first collegiate tournament, did not record a birdie on the day but had an effective front nine in the second round by shooting 2-over with seven pars and two bogeys.
Lee shot an 81 in the first round without the benefit of a birdie. She then shot an 84 in the second round after carding two birdies. But three doubles countered those birdies. Freshman Tori Mouton will enter tomorrow's third round in the top-15. She shot a 168 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 12th. Senior Kiaira Porter shot a 175 to round out A&T's participation on Saturday.
