BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – North Carolina A&T Sophomore Kennedi Lee is in contention to win the Central Michigan University Invitational after the first day and first round on Monday in women's golf. Lee shot a 5-over 77 at the par-72, 5,935-yard Birmingham County Club golf course.
Lee is three shots off the lead in fourth place behind Bowling Green's Emily Nystrom, who shot a first-round 2-over 74. Oakland's Bridget Boczar and Bowling Green's Kayla Davis are tied for second place with a 3-over 75. Meanwhile, Oakland's Ashley Chin and Loyola's Kate Meier are tied for fifth at 6-over 78.
The Aggies are in sixth place after shooting a 39-over 327. They are 15 shots off the lead behind Bowling Green's 24-over 312. Oakland (30-over, 318) and Central Michigan (32-over, 320) round out the top 3.
Lee began her round on the par-3, 188-yard 11th hole with a bogey. After a par on the 12th hole and a bogey on the 13th hole, she parred the next two holes on the 14th and 15th before going, birdie, birdie par-4, 324-yard, 16th and the par-4, 355-yard 17th.
She parred the 18th hole, finishing the back nine at even par. Lee's back nine included three bogeys and a double bogey for a nine-hole 5-over. Lee made 10 pars on Monday and was 1-over on the course's four par-3s.
Freshman Victoria Stutts tied for 12th with an 80-over par 80 in the first round. Stutts recorded a team-high 11 pars in the round, including parring the first four holes.
Senior Kiaira Porter finished tied for 34th after an 84. She picked up a birdie on the par-5, 488-yard 18th hole. Senior Jayla Rogers and Vileska Gelpi tied for 43rd after an 86 in the first round. Rogers birdie the 12th, and Gelpi recorded two birdies.
The second and final round concludes Tuesday starting at 10 a.m.
