BURLINGTON, NC — Ekaterina Prokhorova surged 10 spots up the leaderboard into a four-way tie for fourth place on the opening day of the annual Elon Invitational at the 71-par 6,025-yard Alamance Country Club course on Monday.
Prokhorova's 1-under 141 performance Monday highlighted a steady but challenging day for the Aggies, who shot a 17-over 301 opening round before shaving off three strokes for a 14-over 298 second round. The Aggies carded a 31-over 599, leaving them in 11th heading into Tuesday's final round.
The hosting team, the Elon Phoenix, shares first place with James Madison at 2-over 570. Radford trails the leaders by three strokes at 5-over 573.
Prokhorova started the day with a bogey on the par-3 149-yard eighth hole, but she steadied herself immediately with a birdie on the par-4 365-yard ninth. Four pars followed before a bogey on the 14th. She ran into trouble again on the par-4, 18th, before making the turn, where she parred the first five holes.
Prokhorova ran back into the red numbers on the par-5 475-yard sixth en route to a 1-over 72. She improved in the second round, starting with three pars before giving back a shot on the par-4 315-yard 11th, her only bogey of the round. However, she recovered nicely. She birdied the par-4, 355-yard, 13th before carding eight straight pars.
She broke that incredible streak with a two on the par-3, 154-yard fourth before birdieing No. 6 again to finish with an impressive second-round 69.
Freshman Kaathi Gunasegar showed poise in her second collegiate tournament. She strung together seven straight pars after starting with a bogey on the par-4 363-yard 10th, and finished with a solid opening-round 73 before fading to a 78 in the afternoon for a 9-over 151.
Gunasegar birdied three holes over the first two rounds. Senior Tori Mouton added consistency, carding a 75 and 76 to tie her teammate at 9-over. Polina Marina posted a 14-over 156, while Sofia Fernando rounded out the lineup at 19-over.
