KHOLER, Wis. – The North Carolina A&T women's golf team won the PGA Works Championship on Wednesday, and the Aggies also had the top medalist in junior Ekaterina Prokhorova in what was an excellent week for the program after A&T junior Polina Marina placed second.
The Aggies shot a three-round 302-295-337—934 to win the tournament at the par 72, 5,287-yard historic Whistling Straits – Irish golf course by one stroke over the Howard University Bison who shot a final-round 323 to erase a 14-shot deficit from Tuesday to make Wednesday's finish one of the most exciting in A&T women's golf program history.
It was a back-and-forth affair down the stretch with the Aggies holding off the Bison's charge to win the Works trophy.
Prokhorova claimed the individual title by shooting 71-73-82—226 to finish at 10-over par. On a windy day that resulted in higher scoring, Prokhorova's teammate Marina shot 84 to finish three shots off the lead after a three-round 77-68-84—229. Howard's Marley Franklin rounded out the top three by shooting 74-78-79—231 to finish 15-over. After a fourth-place finish at Sawgrass last season, junior Tori Mouton finished in a three-way tie for 14th with a three-day total of 75-77-88—240.
Prokhorova's day started strong. She birdied the 118-yard par 3, third. The birdie moved her to even par for the round before two straight pars were placed on her card. She closed the front nine with two bogeys and two pars to finish the front with a 39. The back nine was a little more treacherous.
She was plus-3 on the back nine after three holes before pars on 13 and 14. Prokhorova then posted three straight bogeys and a double bogey to end her round and the tournament. Marina never really made a challenge for Prokhorova's crown, but she did hit a key birdie for the Aggies to help win the title.
Marina's round started with a double bogey on one before a par and two more bogeys moved her to plus-4 to start the round. A birdie on the 430-yard par 5, fifth got Marina down to 3-over before two additional bogeys gave her a score of 41 on the front nine. Marina opened and closed the back nine superbly.
A birdie on the 340-yard par 4, 10th moved Marina to 4-over before she was met with a string of four straight bogeys, a triple bogey and a double bogey brought her to the 493-yard par 5, 18th. It was a key birdie after Howard's Franklin bogeyed 18 along with teammate Kendall Jackson.
Junior Ana Rodriguez scored a three-round 79-77-87—243 to finish in a tie for 18th place. She had one birdie during the round, coming on the par 3, third. Sophomore Sofia Fernando placed 22nd for the tournament, finishing with a three-day total of 83-79-84—246.
The Aggies close their season similarly to how they started it, with a golfer taking first place after Mouton won the SAS HBCU Championship. The PGA Works Championship title is the Aggies first this season.
