MORGANTON, NC – After battling through weather conditions, the North Carolina A&T women's golf team ended the first two rounds of The Mimosa Invitational hosted by Appalachian State at the par 72, 6,274-yard Mimosa Hills Golf Course in third place after Monday's action.
The Aggies shot 49-over 625 during the first two rounds. A&T is 15 shots behind clubhouse leader Tennessee Tech after the Golden Eagles compiled a 34-over 610. Two shots behind the Golden Eagles are the Wofford College Terriers. The Terries shot 36-over 612 on Monday.
Wofford had the lead after the first round, but Tennessee Tech's second-round 305 propelled the Golden Eagles into the lead. The Aggies were in third after completing the first round, after firing off a 306.
Despite shooting 319 in the second, the Aggies remain a shot ahead of the Gardner-Webb University (GWU) Runnin' Bulldogs who shot a two-round 626. Host App State is in fifth after shooting an opening day 627.
A&T junior Polina Marina stood as the clubhouse leader after Round 1. Marina shot a first-round 1-under 71 before her second-round 78 dropped her into a third-place tie with GWU's Neza Siftar at 5-over 149.
Both golfers are two shots behind the clubhouse leader after two rounds, Wofford's Bella Kent. Kent moved into the lead from third place after the first round by shooting a second-round 74 to finish the day with a 3-over 147. Western Carolina's Elizabeth Lohbauer follows her after Lohbauer shot 72-76—148 to finish one shot off the lead.
Marina's round started on the par 3 No. 6 and moved to plus-1 after a bogey on the par 3 No. 9. She moved to the back nine and back to even par with a birdie on the 465-yard par 5 12th. Marina parred the remaining six holes on the back nine before returning to the front nine and birdieing the par 4, 382-yard first and the par 5, 460-yard third to take her score to 2-under. She finished her first round with a bogey on No. 5.
She had a rough start to her second round, bogeying five of her first eight holes to move to 4-over for the day. Marina gathered herself on the 357-yard par 4 16th with a birdie before bogeying the final two holes on the back nine. Marina parred the first three holes on the front nine before ending her round and day with a bogey on No. 4 before birdieing the 357-yard par 4 5th, finishing with her 149.
A&T junior Ekaterina Prokhorova also had an excellent day. She finished just outside the top 10, placing in a three-way tie for 11th after shooting 10-over 154. Prokhorova carded four birdies on Monday, but she also had three double bogeys.
Junior Ana Rodriguez shot 85-81—166 on Monday to place 40th. Sophomore Sofia Fernando placed three birdies on her card on Monday, but two triple bogeys hampered her round. She shot 85-82—167. The Aggies had an unfortunate injury to junior Tori Mouton.
Mouton had a solid first round before leaving the course. She shot a first-round 74, which included five birdies. She started the day at the par 5 No. 7. When she reached the par 4, 410-yard 18th she was at plus-1. She birdied 18th before birdieing No. 1 to move to 1-under for the round. She parred her next two holes before bogeying the final three holes she played on Monday.
