ST. HELENA ISLAND, SC – After the second day and round of the Fripp Island Intercollegiate women's golf event hosted by USC Upstate at the par-72, 6,040-yard Fripp Island Resort golf course, A&T senior Ekaterina Prokhorova remains in the top five after firing off a 3-over 75 on Sunday.
Prokhorova is in a tie for fourth place, nine shots off the lead after shooting a two-round 8-over 152. Charleston Southern's Katie Stephens leads the tournament at 1-under 143, followed by teammate Eugenie Varet, who stands at 3-over 147. Presbyterian's Maddie Peake is in third at 7-over 151, and Gardner-Webb's Eva Bulger is in a tie with Prokhorova at 8-over 152.
Senior Tori Mouton moved into the top 10 after finishing the first round in 12th place. After shooting a second-round 5-over 77, Mouton is in a three-way tie for ninth place at 12-over 154. Senior Polina Marina went from the top 10 to 12th place after shooting a second-round 7-over 79. She has a two-day total of 13-over 155.
The Aggies are in a tie for third place with Gardner-Webb at 50-over 626. Charleston Southern leads the tournament at 23-over 599.
Prokhorova had a tough start to the front nine, posting a double bogey on No. 1. She went on a string of seven straight pars before ending the front nine with a bogey on No. 9. She made the turn to the back nine at No. 10, where she recorded a birdie on the 446-yard par-5 hole. After she gave the shot back on 11 with a bogey, she carded two straight pars before another bogey on the 14th.
Three straight pars followed before Prokhorova ended the back nine with a birdie on the par-5, 499-yard 18th. If Prokhorova remains in the top five, it will mark the sixth straight tournament she has placed in the top five in an event.
Mouton also had two birdies on Sunday. After four bogeys, two pars and a double bogey, Mouton birdied the par-3, 196-yard eighth before posting a par on No. 9 before making the turn to the back nine. She opened the back nine with a birdie on No. 10 before starting a string of four straight pars. Mouton bogeyed 15 before ending the back nine with three consecutive pars.
Marina also birdied No. 9. Her card also included five bogeys, one double bogey and 11 pars. Juniors Kaathi Gunasegar and Sofia Fernando also played for the Aggies on Sunday. Gunasegar has a two-round 24-over 166, and Fernando has a two-round 27-over 169.
The final round of the Fripp Island Collegiate is on Monday.
