BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Playing in their final tournament of the season, the North Carolina A&T women's golf team finished Day 1 of the PGA Works Championships in fifth place after shooting a first-round 22-over 306 on Monday at the par-71, 5,772-yard Bent Brook Golf Course.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi leads the tournament by shooting a first-round 1-under 283. The Howard Bison is eight strokes off the lead as it shot a 7-over 291. Delaware State rounds out the top-3 in the 11-team tournament by shooting a 13-over 297. A&T is two strokes behind Texas Southern, who finished with a 20-over 304.
Senior Jayla Rogers had the best outing for A&T on Monday. She is in a six-way tie for 13th, six shots off the lead after shooting a 4-over 75. The leader after Day is Corpus Christi's Lucie Charbonnier, who posted a 4-under 67 in the first round to lead teammate Lucia Ramirez by three strokes after Ramirez shot a 1-under 70. There is a four-way tie for third place at 1-over 72.
Rogers came to the ninth hole at 3-over before carding her first birdie of the round at No. 9 when she placed a three on the card at the par-4, 340-yard hole. After making the turn, she bogeyed two more holes before going on a string of four straight pars before she bogeyed the 302-yard par-4 17th to move to 5-over. Rogers lowered that score with a birdie on the par-4 360-yard 18th.
Victoria Stutts finished in a six-way tie for 19th by shooting a 5-over 76. Stutts had a birdie on the front nine on the par-4, 361-yard sixth. But that was surrounded by three bogeys and a double bogey. But she did have a better back nine. She went to the par-5, 464-yard 16th at 7-over before scoring an eagle on the hole. She parred the next two holes to finish with her 76.
Kiaira Porter finished a shot behind Stutts with a 6-over 77. Porter is in a five-way tie for 25th after carding one birdie during the round, a three on the par-4, 404-yard second. A&T's Kennedi Lee and Vileska Gelpi finished in a four-way tie for 30th at 7-over 78.
The ladies will play again on Tuesday during the three-day, three-round event.
