DURHAM – North Carolina A&T lost 4-0 to No. 19 Duke University in non-conference men's tennis Sunday evening at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The Aggies are 10-9 overall. Duke took the doubles point by winning two of three matchups. The third doubles match went unfinished.
Garrett Johns and Sean Sculley defeated junior Esteban Lopez and senior Vasil Ivanov 7-5 at No. 1 doubles before Andrew Dale and Andrew Zhang beat A&T freshmen Ethan Baly and Ian Pedersen 6-2.
With the doubles point secured for the Blue Devils, the No. 2 doubles match between Duke's Faris Khan and Niroop Vallabhaneni and A&T freshmen Eder Blanco and Jorge Perez went unfinished with the match tied at 6-6, with Blanco and Perez leading 2-1 in the tiebreaker.
Singles play started with Vallabhaneni defeating Baly 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. Arturo Kam then defeated Pedersen 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. Duke clinched the match as Dale defeated Perez 6-3, 6-1 at No.5 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Lopez lost the first set to No. 64 Johns 6-2, but Lopez led the second set 5-4 before it went unfinished. Ivanov lost his first set to Zhang 7-5 before taking a 3-2 lead in the second set before the match ended. It keeps Ivanov's seven-match win streak intact.
At No. 3, Blanco lost to Khan 6-1 in the first set before the match ended at No. 3 with the two gentlemen tied at 4. Blanco's seven-match win streak also stays in place.
The Aggies will be back in action Thursday, April 7, when they travel to Durham, N.C., to play NCCU at 2 p.m.
