WHY A&T DIDN'T GET THE "W": Offense. The Aggies struggles to score continued. They scored four points in the first 8 ½ minutes, falling behind 15-4. The starting guard trio of Tyler Maye, Demetric Horton and Kameron Langley went a combined 4-for-18 from the field and 0-for-5 from 3-point range.
WHY GWU GOT THE "W": Resilience. The Runnin' Bulldogs withstood every comeback attempt from A&T. Every time the Aggies got within striking distance, Gardner-Webb University (GWU) would hit a big shot to retake the momentum. A&T cut a double-figure lead to five once and two six on another occasion. But GWU answered with a dunk on the first occasion and a 3-pointer on the second. Both plays aided in getting the respective leads back to plus-10.
CRUCIAL: The Aggies trailed by 15 with 15:32 remaining in the game but stormed back with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes highlighted by 3-pointers from Harry Morrice and graduate guard David Beatty, forcing a GWU timeout. The Runnin' Bulldogs ran a backdoor play for an alley-oop that ignited the crowd coming out of the break. A few moments later, graduate guard Kameron Langley turned the ball over and fouled to prevent a fast-break score. But the officials ruled the foul intentional. In his frustration, Langley received a technical foul. The turn of events landed GWU four made free throws, possession and an 11-point lead.
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T men's basketball team dropped a road contest against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 69-62, inside the Paul Porter Arena in Big South Conference men's basketball action on Saturday.
The Aggies (9-15, 4-6 Big South) have lost five straight. Meanwhile, GWU (13-10, 7-3 Big South) secured its fourth straight win.
A&T made a valiant effort to snap its losing streak after falling behind 15-4 early. Junior forward Harry Morrice checked into the game and sparked A&T, scoring immediately on a hook shot in the lane. Junior Demetric Horton followed with a 3-point play to get the deficit to six. But GWU eventually got its lead to 13, 34-21, with 3:01 remaining in the first half.
Junior Jeremy Robinson, who missed the Aggies previous two games with an injury, knocked down a 3-pointer to get the lead down to 10. However, Anthony Selden hit back with a 3-pointer before Morris sparked a 6-0 with a three to make it 37-30 at intermission.
A&T was able to stay close in the first half thanks to 22 bench points led by Robinson's eight first-half points and Morrice's seven.
GWU grabbed an early 15 second-half lead. However, the Aggies scored only two points in the first five minutes of half No. 2.
However, a 10-0 Aggies run sparked by a three apiece from graduate David Beatty and Morrice got the Aggies to within five at 47-42. But Langley's intentional and technical four put the Bulldogs ahead by 11 with 11:08 to play.
The Aggies would not go quietly, however. Five-and-half minutes later, freshman guard Kyle Duke provided some energy off the bench as he used a Beatty block into a transition basket to cut GWU's lead to 60-51. Graduate Justin Whatley followed with a three to get the Aggies to within six.
Selden's three increased the Bulldogs' lead back to nine before Beatty kept the Aggies momentum alive with a 3-pointer to make it a 63-57 game with 4:25 remaining. A&T made only one field goal over the next 3:32, however.
GWU grabbed four offensive rebounds on the same possession during that stretch, allowing the Bulldogs to burn time off the clock.
Beatty's layup with 35 seconds remaining got the Aggies to within five at 67-62, but the Aggies could get no closer.
QUOTABLE: "I thought we got great effort and production from our bench. We defended a lot better in the second half. We have to convert in transition more and get easy buckets. We have to keep believing in each other and working hard to get through this adversity. We will get it figured out."
