KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T women's cross country team returned to action on Friday night during the High Point University VertCross Invitational at the 6k Ivey M. Redmon Complex course.
The Aggies finished seventh with 196 points. A&T finished with a total time of 2:11.54, with an average time of 26:23. HPU won its event by finishing with 32 points and five top-10 finishers. East Tennessee State University (ETSU) placed second with 62 points, followed by Charleston Souther's 65 points.
In every race she has run for A&T, sophomore Fajr Kelly has had the fastest time. That happened again on Friday as Kelly finished 35th with a time of 24:16.4. Saturday marked Kelly's first career 6k race.
Individually, HPU's Lindsay Ickes won the event with a time of 20:39.2. In the top-5, she was followed by Campbell's Dorcus Ewoi, ETSU's Genevieve Schwarz, HPU's Katie Taylor and Charleston Southern's Sarah McCartney.
Meanwhile, Kelly had an average time of 4:02.7 per kilometer (1,000 meters). She ran the first 5k of the race in 20:11 after completing the 5k Royal XC Challenge last week in 19:20.2.
Juniors Camille Herring and Love Melton finished 49th and 50th, respectively. Herring finished in 6:48.7 and Melton finished in 25:24.9. Juniors Ania Campbell and Jayla Jones also scored for the Aggies. Campbell scored 44 points (7:36.4) and Jones scored 45 points (28:25.3).
The Aggies next race will be the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held Oct. 28 at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark, Del.
