DURHAM – On Tuesday morning, in 62-degree weather with clear calm skies, the North Carolina A&T men's and women's cross country teams, following their respective season openers at the Elon "Friday Night Lights" Opener last Friday, attended Duke University's cross-country Dual and Tri-Meet at Sally Meyerhoff Fitness Loop, which included the host Blue Devils, A&T and the North Carolina Central University (NCCU).
The men competed in the 4K race, and the women tried to post their fastest times in the 3K. A&T's men scored 69 points, finishing in 1:06.22. Senior Abdiselam Green was A&T's top runner (12:39.8), followed by freshman Taysaun Wilson (13:02.8). Junior Kaleb Conway was the third-fastest Aggie with a time of 13:29.2.
Duke took the top six spots and won the meet 15 points. Beck Wittstadt took first place, finishing 11:51.2.
For the women, A&T and Duke went head-to-head, with the Blue Devils winning with a total of 17 points. Stephanie Moss led Duke, finishing in 9:58.9. A&T senior Deavion Deleon placed seventh overall and took the top spot for A&T with a time of 10:17.8. Deleon posted the fourth fastest time among runners who were not unattached. Therefore, she scored four points for an A&T team that finished with 38 total.
Junior Ryan Prioleau followed Deleon in 11:21.3, and freshman Aniyah Francis finished in 11:21.6. Deleon has established a foundation for A&T, leading the team as the top finisher in today's meet as well as the Elon Opener.
The Aggies do not return to action until Friday, September 19, when they travel to Cary, NC, to compete in the Adidas XC Challenge at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The men compete at 5:15 p.m. in the 6K event. The women start at 5:55 p.m. and will run a 5K race.
