ELON, NC – The North Carolina A&T track and field programs are undoubtedly excited about their newcomers. If Friday night is an indication, they have every right to be.
The A&T men's and women's cross country teams made their season debut Friday at Elon's annual Elon "Friday Night Lights" Opener at the Elon Cross Country Course. University of Nebraska transfer Deavion Deleon led the Aggie women in their 4k event, finishing 13th with a time of 14:12.9. The Aggie women finished ninth, compiling 248 points.
Elon won the event with 27 points, placing five competitors in the top 10, including individual winner Abigail Beville, who finished in 13:36.6. Davidson finished second, and Elon came in third in the 11-team event.
Senior Abdiselam Green led the men, finishing the 6k event in 19:54.7. It marked a 6k personal record for Green, breaking his old best mark of 19:55.4 clocked at last season's Elon "Friday Night Lights" Open event. The A&T men also finished ninth, totaling 260 points.
High Point University (HPU) won the men's event with 33 points, placing four runners in the top 10 to finish ahead of Coastal Carolina's 74 points. The Chanticleers did have the individual winner, with Adam Groves finishing ahead of everyone in 18:19.8. Davidson finished third in the 10-team event with 101 points.
Before attending Nebraska, Deleon attended Papillion-La Vista South High School, where she placed 12th at the Nebraska state meet in cross country. Two years earlier, she helped Papillion-La Vista South finish runner-up at the state meet. She should be a welcome addition to the Aggies' indoor and outdoor women's teams in the 800 meters.
Freshman Aniyah Francis was A&T's second-fastest women's runner on Friday, finishing in 50th with a time of 15:31.6. Francis finished second at the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 1A District 4 meet as a senior. She finished third at the FHSAA 1A Region 2 and ninth in the state. Junior Ryan Prioleau was close behind her on Friday with a time of 15:31.6 as the Aggies showcased seven runners on the women's side.
On the men's side, freshman Taysaun Wilson finished behind Green with a time of 20:19.2. Junior Kaleb Conway had the third-fastest time out of eight A&T competitors on Friday, finishing in 20:27.4 for a 6k personal record.
A&T returns to action on Tuesday, September 2, when they compete at the Duke Dual Meet at the Sally Meyerhoff Fitness Loop in Durham, NC.
