EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T outdoor track and field received recognition from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for its superb weekend at the University of Texas and the University of South Carolina (USC).
The MEAC named sophomore Cambrea Sturgis its female track athlete of the week. The conference named junior Jasmine Jenkins its female field athlete of the week, and senior Trevor Stewart earned male track athlete of the week.
N.C. A&T's weekend included winning the 200m at the 93rd annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, winning the women's hammer throw at Weems Baskins Invitational at USC, and posting the world's fastest time in the men's 4x400-meter relay at UT.
Sturgis won the 200m in 22.87 and will enter this weekend ranked second nationally in the event. Over the weekend, she also finished third in the 100m and has the second-fastest time in the nation at 11.21. She also teamed with junior Symone Darius, sophomore Kamaya Debose-Epps and freshman Jonah Ross to finish fourth in the 4x100 in 44.19 to rank sixth nationally.
While Sturgis was starring in Austin, Texas, the Aggies also spread their dominance in the southeast. Jenkins won the women's hammer throw with a toss of 170 feet, 2-inches. It was Jenkins's first career win in any event. She is ranked No. 1 in the MEAC in the women's hammer throw.
Stewart ran the anchor leg on the fastest 4x400 team in the world. The Aggies foursome of junior Daniel Stokes, freshman Randolph Ross Jr., senior Elijah Young and Stewart ran a 3:00.23 at UT over the weekend. Stewart ran a 44.35 split on the anchor to blow away the competition. The 4x400 team ran the 11th-fastest time in NCAA history.
The Aggies are back in action this weekend in two different areas. A portion of the team is headed to Gainesville, Fla., to participate in the Florida Relays, April 2-3. Another portion of the team will travel to High Point University for the High Point VertKlasse Meeting, April 2-3.
