EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T men's tennis team is slated to take on Davidson College Saturday, Feb. 20 at noon before their 2021 home opener against College of Charleston on Sunday, Feb. 21 at noon.
The Aggies (0-2) dropped their season-opening doubleheader matchup against the Elon Phoenix, 5-2 and 7-0. Sophomore Esteban Lopez picked up a singles win over Elon's Chung-Han Tsai 6-3, 2-6 and 10-4 in the tiebreaker at No. 3 singles, while freshman Mike Ogundele secured his first win as an Aggie over Maxwell Zucker 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Vasil Ivanov, the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rookie of the year in 2019, leads the Aggies. Ivanov has 13 career singles victories under his belt. The Aggies were 0-1 at home last season, a loss against College of Charleston, 6-1, on Feb. 2.
Davidson College is 1-4 in 2021, with their lone victory against Campbell, 4-3, on Feb. 6. The Wildcats have also played Elon this season, dropping that match, 6-1. Freshman Alejandro Solares, the reigning Atlantic 10 rookie of the week, leads the Wildcats. Solares is 2-3 in singles matches and 2-2 on the doubles court this year.
Solares picked up both of his singles wins on the No. 6 court, one against Elon's Tsai and the other against Campbell's Pol Otin. The Wildcats are 1-2 at home thus far.
As for College of Charleston, the Cougars are 1-0 this season, defeating Coker College, 6-1, on Feb. 9. Graduate transfer Guido Argentini leads the Cougars. Argentini picked up two wins in his Charleston debut, defeating Coker's Justus Lehmann 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and teaming up with sophomore Noah Borges at No. 1 doubles for the victory, 6-2.
