Aggies Women Face Top MEAC Team

N.C. A&T looks to avenge their loss to the Norfolk State Spartans in last year's MEAC tournament.

AGGIES OVERVIEW:  North Carolina A&T women's basketball looks for revenge against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) leader in Norfolk State on Saturday at Corbett Sports Center.  The Spartans defeated the Aggies in the semifinals of the MEAC tournament last season after the Aggies finished the 2018-19 MEAC regular season 16-0. The Aggies, who are normally a dominant team on the glass, were outrebounded 44-31 in the game.
Junior guard Deja Winters and senior guard Cinia McCray rank among the top-20 scorers in the conference with Winters ranked ninth and McCray ranked 16th. Seniors Le'on Hill and Alexus Lessears are ranked among the top-10 rebounders in the MEAC with Hill ranked seventh and Lessears ranked eighth.
Junior center Jayla Jones-Pack ranks third in the league in field goal shooting (51.4) with a 51.4 field goal. Lessears ranks fifth in shooting (49.1) and Winters ranks ninth (44.0). Winters ranks third in the 3-point shooting in the MEAC (39.4).

NORFOLK STATE SPARTANS OVERVIEW: Before entering conference play, Norfolk State was on a four-game losing streak. But since entering MEAC competition, the Spartans are 6-0 and are winning by an average margin of 19.2 points. The Spartans are led by the MEAC's leading scorer in Chanette Hicks (21.9 ppg). Hicks also leads the league in assists (5.2) and steals (5.2). La'Deja James is the team's second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per game.

Series: The Aggies hold a slim 19-18 advantage over the Spartans including a 9-8 record in Greensboro.

Rankings: The Aggies rank second and are ninth in the country in turnovers forced per game (22.0). They lead the conference and rank seventh nationally in 3-point field goal defense (25.3 percent). The Aggies also lead the MEAC and rank eighth in the nation in field goal percentage defense (33.9 percent).

N.C. A&T has 86 total blocks this season which is 45th nationally and second in the MEAC. In blocked shots per game, the Aggies are second in the conference (4.5) and 41st nationally. The

Aggies lead the conference in scoring defense (56.1) and are 25th in the nation. The Aggies lead the conference in scoring margin (11.0) and are 52nd in the country.

Career Watch: McCray has recorded 929 career points and needs 71 points to become the 14th player in school history to reach 1,000.

Lessears has 787 career rebounds to place fourth in school history. She needs 42 more boards to move into third past Tia Richardson (2000-04).

Hill has 531 career rebounds to place 14th in school history and needs seven rebounds to move into 13th place past Amber Bland (2006-09).

Lessears and Hill are both in the top-10 in blocks in school history. Lessears is one five players in school history with more than 100 blocks (106). She is fifth all-time in school history. Hill has 97 blocks and needs three blocks to become the sixth player to reach 100 in school history.
