Box Score BALTIMORE (September 22, 2018) – North Carolina A&T keeps setting her and sophomore outside hitter Courteney Pitt keeps delivering.
Pitt tied a career-high with 24 kills to lead the Aggies to their second win in three matches they have played in the Charm City Classic as they knocked off co-host Coppin State, 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17) Saturday afternoon at CSU's Physical Education Complex. Fellow Baltimore school Morgan State is also hosting games at Hill Field House.
Pitt has tied or reached her career high in four straight matches. She has secured 20 or more kills in three straight contests. She is the first Aggie to accomplish this feat since Arlene Mitchell did in 2006 between Sept. 9-12.
Pitt has had 183 attack attempts in her last four matches, and she has been efficient with those opportunities. Pitt has only 19 attack errors in those 183 attempts for a combined hitting percentage of .366 in her last four outings. She had a .396 hitting percentage against the Coppin State Eagles on Saturday.
As if that were not enough, she also recorded her second career double-double as she added 10 digs to her totals. Junior Leila Haynesworth has also played well in the Charm City Classic with a combined 35 kills in three matches including 12 against CSU. She has a combined .235 hitting percentage for the classic.
The Aggies (5-7) dominated the first two sets. They used a 4-0 spurt in the first to take a 20-13 lead and were never seriously challenged from there. Freshman Macenzie Richards and Haynesworth had kills during the run and freshman Lily Walton and junior Makaylah Elliot and Richards had block assists.
Set No. 2 was a little tighter. An attack error by Elliot tied the set at 19 before a Pitt kill ignited a 6-0 Aggies run to end the set and give N.C. A&T a commanding two-set lead. Pitt had six kills and no attack errors on 11 attempts in the set.
CSU prevented the sweep in the third set, however. Haynesworth's kill marched the Aggies closer to a sweep as they took a 19-18 lead. But an Aggies service error and attack error coupled with a kill from CSU's Miajavon Coleman gave the Eagles a 21-19 advantage and even increased their lead to 23-20. Pitt got the Aggies to within two with a kill but a kill from CSU's Asia Stennis and a service ace from Chelsie Kolibar kept the Eagles alive in the match.
It did not take the Aggies long to return to their dominating ways with Pitt doing most of the domineering. Pitt collected 11 kills in the fourth and deciding set, a figure she has never reached in a single set in her career. She was set 16 times and made only two attack errors. Back-to-back Pitt kills led to a 19-12 Aggies lead and CSU timeout. The “TO” did not help much. The Aggies took a 23-13 lead on back-to-back Pitt kills and a service ace from sophomore Edie Brewer. Haynesworth ended the match and set with a kill.
Brewer had a stellar match, contributing 39 assists, three services and four kills with no attack errors on six attempts.
