ELON, NC – The Elon Phoenix women's outdoor track and field team is the premier team in the CAA. The North Carolina A&T women's squad is young and on the rise.
Do not be surprised if they become legitimate contenders for Elon's crown soon.
In the meantime, the Phoenix won their second straight Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) outdoor track and field championship. They claimed the title on Saturday at the 2026 CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at Elon University's Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex.
Over the two-day event, the Aggies secured four event championships and totaled 102 points to finish fourth. Their victories came in the 4x100-meter relay, the 400 meters, and both the long and triple jumps. Senior
Olivia Dowd stood out by claiming the CAA title in both jumping events mentioned.
Elon won the event with 193 points, followed by Hampton (140 points) and Towson (110 points) in the top three.
"We had a couple of people who were injured," said director of track and field
Allen Johnson. "Had they not been injured, we could have gotten out here with maybe second or third place. But we're young. We're so young. We have so many freshmen and sophomores."
The Aggies competed without All-American high jumper
Spirit Morgan. Freshman
Jayda Lewis, who held the top 100-meter hurdle time in the CAA before the conference championships, did not compete over the weekend due to injury.
"I believe with the addition of the recruits we have coming in, combined with the people who are here now maturing, the next couple of years we are going to be vying for a title on the women's side as well," said Johnson.
If those incoming recruits can match Dowd's effort, the future is indeed in good hands. Dowd complemented her win in the long jump on Friday by defending her CAA outdoor triple jump crown on Saturday. Dowd jumped 41 feet, 5 inches to win the crown in 2026. She is in an excellent position to qualify for the 2026 NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round regional meet, May 27-30 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. Dowd ranks 21st in the East Region in the triple jump (42 feet, 9 inches) and 30th in the long jump (20 feet, 6 ½ inches).
Junior
Serenity Brazell is another outstanding female track star expected to return to Aggieland next season. Last season, she finished fourth at the CAA outdoor championships in the 400m. On Saturday, she won the title with a personal record of 53.20. Freshman teammate
Malayia Morrow placed seventh with a time of 55.92.
The Aggies 4x100 team did not enter the weekend as favorites. Still, they captured the program's second straight CAA outdoor title in the 4x100. Despite not coming in with the lowest time, graduate
Zamia Stelly, junior
Makenna Urbanek, sophomore
Meara Rasul, and junior
Kymara Brodie clocked a 44.63 to finish ahead of Hampton (44.79).
The Aggies had some excellent second-place finishes as well. Senior
Taylor Reagor's best throw reached 170 feet, 1 inch in the women's discus, placing her behind Hampton's Rochele Solomon, whose best measured at 173 feet, 2 inches. On the track, Urbanek placed second in the 100m (11.60), behind Hampton's Brianna Charles (11.54). Rasul finished fourth with 11.82. In the 100H, Stelly crossed in 13.65, just fractions of a second behind Elon's Mia Stimpson (13.62).
What could be seen as foreshadowing are the finishes the Aggies had in the 400H and the 200m. In the 400H, four freshmen finished fourth through eighth:
Eden Fuller (1:00.06),
Kindal Smith (1:01.68),
Danayja Harper (1:02.59), and
Rachari Wildgoose (1:13.43). During the 200m, Rasul (23.67), Urbanek (23.70), and Brodie (24.28) finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
The Aggies are very young.
