COLUMBIA, SC – A North Carolina A&T women's track and field indoor program that stood for 12 years has now been broken twice in as many weeks. Not to be outdone, the men also decided to topple a 12-year-old record in the high jump on Saturday.
Redshirt junior
Deavion Deleon may have even topped that because she demolished the women's 1-mile record she broke last week.
A week after breaking A&T's women's high jump record, Morgan broke it again on Saturday during the second day of the Carolina Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina at the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex on Saturday.
Morgan jumped 6 feet to dominate the women's high jump on Saturday at U of SC. The next closet competitor was four inches shy of Morgan's mark. Morgan's measurement marked an indoor personal best and moved her to 15th nationally while keeping at the top of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) rankings.
Last week, she set the new program record at 5 feet, 10 ¾ inches on her way to winning CAA Field Athlete of the Week. She is now the first Aggie in program history to clear six feet on the high jump bar.
Meanwhile,
Yule Pieters finished second in the men's high jump at the Carolina Challenge, leaping a personal-best 6 feet, 9 ½ inches to finish behind Baylor's Landon Freeman. Pieters jumps breaks the program record set by Cliff Obodo, who jumped 6 feet, 9 inches at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 14, 2014.
Sophomore
Rayne Williams also moved into the top 10 in the men's high jump in the CAA. Williams placed sixth with a jump of 6 feet, 5 ½ inches and now ranks eighth in the league behind freshman teammate
Brenton Baker, who jumped 6 feet, 6 inches at the Mondo College Invite three weeks ago.
Deleon joined the record-breaking party again. A week after breaking the indoor women's program record in the mile (4:57.17), Deleon abolished that mark by placing second in the mile with a time of 4:49.26. By breaking her previous mark by almost eight seconds, Deleon now holds the two best times in program history. Deleon ranks third in the CAA in the women's 1 mile. The Aggies had even more success on the track. Freshman
Rachari Wildgoose ran a personal record 39.73 to win the women's 300 meters. Junior
Caleb Gurnell placed third in the men's 300m at 34.52.
A&T also looked good in the women's shot put, taking the top two spots in the event. Senior
Taylor Reagor's best throw measured at 46 feet as she moved into fifth place in the CAA. Fellow senior
Sage Sumpter finished second at 42 feet, 8 ¼ inches. She is now sixth in the conference in the women's shot put.
Junior
Olivia Dowd started her ascent up the women's long jump rankings by finishing fifth on Saturday with a jump of 18 feet, 10 ½ inches. The jump moves her to sixth in the conference.
In the 4x400-meter relays, the men finished third, and the women placed fourth. Sophomore
Elijah Thomas, junior
Dyimond Walker, junior
Nakhi Benjamin, and senior
Dawson Grogan teamed up to run a 3:13.58. The ladies' foursome included junior
Serenity Brazell, junior
Hayleigh Bryant, freshman
Eden Fuller, and freshman
Kindal Smith as they ran a 3:47.11.
A&T will come back to South Carolina next weekend when they compete in the prestigious Tiger Paw Invitational hosted by Clemson University at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex. A week after the Tiger Paw, the men will try to defend their CAA indoor championship title in Boston, Mass. The women will be after their first CAA indoor title and their first conference title since winning the Big South Conference in 2022.
