CLEMSON, SC – Senior sprinter/hurdler
Jason Holmes had his second straight amazing week, topping what he did last week at the University of South Carolina's Carolina Classic to win the men's 60-meter hurdles at the prestigious Tiger Paw Invitational hosted by Clemson University at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex on Friday.
Holmes won the 60H with a season-best 7.55 to finish ahead of Samford's Bradley Franklin. Holmes will sit firmly in the No. 1 spot in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) in the men's 60H after the weekend. He could find himself in the top 3 nationally following his performance. He also looked good in his two preliminary races, running a 7.648 in the first round before posting a 7.551 in the semifinals.
Holmes, a two-time second-team indoor All-American in the 60H, started making his ascent on the national rankings last week. He ran 7.63 in the 60H finals of the Carolina Classic to finish second. The time moved him into a tie for 15th nationally. That effort also earned him CAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
Friday's effort could qualify him for his third career NCAA Indoor Track and Field Nationals meet. Holmes now has the top three times in program history in the men's 60H.
In running two women's 60H preliminaries, senior
Zamia Stelly improved her status in the CAA. Stelly ran a personal record of 8.48 in the first round to qualify for the semifinals, where she broke that personal record by clocking in at 8.46. She came into the weekend No. 1 in the CAA after running 8.48 at South Carolina last week. She improved her standing over freshman teammate
Jayda Lewis, who is second in the CAA at 8.51.
Meanwhile, junior
Xzaviah Taylor improved his stature in the CAA as the top men's 400-meter runner. Taylor ran a personal-best 46.89 to finish first in his heat and 30th overall. He topped his time of 47.50, clocked at the Mondo College Invitational on January 17, to remain atop the CAA in the 400m.
The Aggies will complete Day 2 of the Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday. Some members of the team will compete at the ASICS Sound Invite at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, NC, on Saturday. Next week, the A&T men will try to defend their CAA indoor conference title at the CAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, February 22-23, in Boston, Mass. The ladies will try to win their first indoor conference title in four years.
