GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T Department of Intercollegiate Athletics' first-ever Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) conference title reaped more benefits for the department on Thursday when the conference announced Allen Johnson as CAA Men's Indoor Coach of the Year.
In addition, junior Jason Holmes earned CAA co-Athlete of the Year accolades. The men's indoor team won the men's CAA indoor title in February in Virginia Beach, marking A&T's first CAA crown.
"The two honors we received today are a tremendous honor and a significant step forward for our track and field programs," said Johnson. "I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with a great group of young men, a great staff and a great athletics department under the leadership of Earl Hilton. They are the ones who make this happen."
Johnson becomes the fourth A&T coach to earn coach of the year, joining volleyball's Hal Clifton, women's basketball's Tarrell Robinson, and bowling's Kim Terrell-Kearney.
He led the Aggies to the CAA title with a score of 185. The closest competitor was Monmouth, who scored 146 points. The Aggies collected eight men's event titles, finished second in five events and third in three.
A&T won CAA men's indoor titles in the 60-meters, 200m, 400m, 60-meter hurdles, 4x400-meter relay, 4x800, triple jump, and shot put. They claimed first, second and third in the 200m and the 60H. A&T finished first and second in the 60m.
Johnson also had two athletes finish in the top 50 nationally in the 200m, three in the top 50 in the 60H, and two in the top 50 in the triple jump. The 4x400 team also finished in the top 50. In addition, Johnson coached Holmes to a second-team All-American honor in the 60H after Holmes qualified for the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Holmes is quickly becoming one of the most decorated CAA track and field athletes in history. He already has a CAA Outdoor Rookie of the Year award and a CAA Indoor Rookie of the Year award in his possession.
On January 18, he ran a personal-best 7.54 in the 60H, breaking the program record held by Leonard Mustari (7.55). Holmes scored 26 points for the Aggies at the CAA indoor meet, placing first in the 60H and second in the 200 and 60m.
He qualified for his second straight NCAA indoor championship and secured his second straight second-team All-American accolade in March. He also owns two CAA 60H titles. In 2024-25, he won his first three 60H finals and went 5-1 in 60H finals during the season.
