BUIES CREEK, NC – For the second straight day, freshman Juana Gomez Weiss earned the lone win for the North Carolina A&T women's tennis team. In A&T's first Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) contest, the Campbell Fighting Camels defeated the Aggies 6-1 at Nisbet Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Aggies are in a difficult part of their schedule, where they will play four matches in five days. It would be five straight days, but the Aggies' contest against North Carolina Central University (NCCU) was canceled on Thursday.
The Aggies will play Winston-Salem State on Sunday after facing Gardner-Webb on Wednesday and Western Carolina on Saturday. A&T dropped to 5-6 overall, while the Fighting Camels improved to 7-6.
Gomez Weiss won at No. 4 singles against Western Carolina, improving to 8-3 on Saturday with a win at No. 4 singles over Jessica Maras, 6-4, 6-4. Gomez Weiss was not the only Aggie to repeat something on Saturday.
For the fourth straight match, sophomore Randy Rakotoarilala played in a thrilling three-set singles match at No. 1. Unfortunately, Rakotoarilala lost all four, including Saturday. On Saturday, Sonia Pieczynska served as the opponent. Pieczynska narrowly escaped Rakotoarilala in the first set, winning 7-6. Rakotoarilala dominated the second set, winning 6-2 before Pieczynska claimed the third-set tiebreaker 10-5.
The Camels started their scoring on Saturday by claiming the doubles point. Like all A&T opponents this season, Campbell started with an advantage because the Aggies forfeited at No. 3 doubles. The Camels would also get the No. 6 singles point by forfeit. When Ofer Kivity and Mollie Garcia defeated Rakotoarilala and junior Hana El Sherif 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, the Camels already had a 3-0 advantage by virtue of winning two doubles matches.
They completed the doubles sweep at No. 2 doubles as Maras and Veronika Prospalova defeated freshman Dorsa Cheraghi and Gomez Weiss 7-5.
Campbell secured the win at No. 3 singles with Kivity defeating El Sherif 6-3, 6-0. The Camels earned another win at No. 2 singles with Garcia defeating Cheraghi 6-1, 6-3. However, freshman Flavia Villegas, who has been strong for the Aggies throughout her first collegiate campaign, played well again. Villegas took Ilouna Aneca to a tiebreaker in the first set before losing 7-6, 9-7 in the tiebreaker. Aneca secured the win in the second set, defeating Villegas 6-2.
A&T will face Winston-Salem at the WSSU tennis courts at 2 p.m.
