BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team endured its first 7-0 loss of the season as the Gardner-Webb University (GWU) Runnin' Bulldogs became the first team to shut out the Aggies. It was an impressive run for the Aggies, considering they have not fielded a No. 6 singles player or a No. 2 doubles team all season.
GWU won the doubles point on Tuesday at the Webb Tennis Complex, starting with a win at No. 2 doubles. GWU's Alizee Poulin and Greta Murzsa defeated A&T freshmen Dorsa Cheraghi and Juana Gomez Weiss 6-3. With the win, the forfeit at No. 3 doubles for A&T clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs also won at No. 1 doubles as Milica Prokic and Natalie Crawford defeated the A&T duo of sophomore Randy Rakotoarilala and junior Hana El Sherif 7-5. El Sherif and Rakotoarilala played their first match at No. 1 doubles this season.
A&T and GWU moved to singles play, where the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead with A&T's forfeit at No. 6. Their lead moved to 3-0 when Natalie Crawford defeated El Sherif 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Flavia Villegas followed by losing the first match of her young career.
After starting her career 8-0, Villegas lost to Murzsa 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. Villegas is now 8-1 this season. Prokic gave GWU a 5-0 advantage with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. The Aggies did play in two three-set matches on Wednesday.
Rakotoarilala played at No. 1 singles for the first time during the 2025 season. She lost the first 6-3 before taking set No. 2, 6-3 before losing in the third set tiebreaker, 10-6. Gomez Weiss also played in a thriller. She lost to Arili Boshoff 7-5 in the first set before having a much stronger performance in the second set, winning 6-2. The two ladies then staged an entertaining third-set tiebreaker, with Boshoff winning 10-8.
A&T quickly returns to action with a Thursday contest at the Piedmont Indoor Center against archrival North Carolina Central University (NCCU) at 4 p.m.
