CULLOWHEE, NC – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis is in the middle of a stretch in its schedule, where it will play five matches in five days. The Aggies received an interruption in that scheduling on Thursday when their match with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) got canceled.
But the Aggies did play on Friday, losing to the Western Carolina Catamounts 6-1 at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The Aggies are 5-5 this season. WCU improved to 10-7.
The Aggies will play again on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Buies Creek, NC against Coastal Athletic Association foe Campbell. They move on to Winston-Salem, NC to face the Winston-Salem State Rams on Sunday at 2 p.m. A&T started its whirlwind with a 7-0 loss at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.
On Friday, the Aggies lost the doubles point to the Catamounts. WCU benefited from a forfeit at No. 3 doubles before the team of Angela Perez and Andrea Redondo defeated the A&T team of freshmen Dorsa Cheraghi and Juana Gomez Weiss 6-1. The Catamounts swept the doubles point at No. 1 singles as Jade Groen and Chloe Schwarz defeated sophomore Randy Rakotarilala and junior Hana El Sherif 6-4.
The match moved to singles, where the Catamounts took a 3-0 lead after an A&T forfeit at No. 6 singles and a win by Redondo at No. 5 singles. Redondo defeated freshman Flavia Villegas 6-2, 6-1. The loss dropped Villegas to 8-2 this season. Cheraghi endured a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Schwarz at No. 2 singles. That win clinched the match for the Catamounts.
But the Aggies did score at No. 4 singles. Gomez Weiss improved to 7-3 this season with a three-set win over Zoe Lui. Lui won the first set 6-0 before Gomez Weiss recovered nicely to win the second set 6-2. She took down Lui 6-3 in third. Another entertaining match occurred at No. 1 singles.
Rakotarilala looked superb in the first set against Isabella Sambola with a 6-0 win. Sambola won the second, 6-3, before Sambola won the tiebreaker 12-10.
