CARY, NC – If it is not clear by now, it should be stated clearly.
The North Carolina A&T women's golf program is having an outstanding fall. The Aggies won again on Sunday behind the excellent play of senior Ekaterina Prokhorova. A&T won the SAS HBCU Invitational at the par-70, 5,843-yard Prestonwood Country Club golf course.
The Aggies shot a three-round, two-day total of 44-over (295-289-300—884), beating North Carolina Central University (NCCU) by 23 strokes to claim the title in the five-team event that also included HBCUs Alabama State, Texas Southern and Southern. A&T now has 11 tournament titles in the nine years since it started.
Meanwhile, an Aggie won the SAS HBCU Invitational for the second straight season. A year after Tori Mouton won the event on a playoff hole, Prokhorova won by two strokes over senior teammate Polina Marina. Prokhorova shot 4-over (73-68-73—214) for the tournament to claim her third individual tournament title win in her last five outings, including the PGA Works title to close out last season.
Prokhorova's win on Sunday ties her with Christyn Carr for the program record for career tournament wins at three apiece.
Marina's 6-over (68-74-74—216) for the tournament to finish second marks the second time in her Aggie career she has finished second behind Marina after finishing second at the PGA Works Championship. Last year's winner, Mouton, placed fourth this season, after shooting a three-round 12-over (74-73-75—222).
Prokhorova's first round included only one birdie before she blitzed the course during her second round. After bogeying the second hole, she secured a birdie on the par-5, 484-yard third before carding a three on the par-4, 324-yard eighth to move to 1-under for the round and 2-over for the tournament.
After making the turn at No. 10, she posted three pars and a bogey before lowering her score again on the par 4, 365-yard 14th with a birdie. Another birdie on the par 4, 375-yard 17th, and a par to close the round had Prokhorova at 1-over for the tournament heading into Sunday's final round. Fighting inclement weather on Sunday, Prokhorova managed to card 13 pars, four bogeys and one birdie. Her one birdie came on the par 4, 361-yard 16th.
Marina set the tone for the Aggies as they opened the tournament. She birdied the par 4, 345-yard first before putting together a string of six consecutive pars. Marina bogeyed the final two holes on the front nine before making the turn and carding a par on the 10th. After a bogey on No. 11 moved Marina to 2-over for the round, she really caught fire.
She birdied No. 12, a par 3, 136-yard hole, before adding another birdie on the par 5, 479-yard 13th. After two straight pars, she moved to 1-under with a birdie on 16. She ended the round at 2-under with a birdie on the par-4, 391-yard 18th. Marina shot an incredible 4-under on the back nine during the first round. During the second round, Marina added three more birdies to go along with five bogeys, seven pars and a double bogey. She was birdie-free on Sunday, but remained competitive thanks to 14 pars.
Mouton also had a good first round. She scored birdies on the par 3, 143-yard second and No. 3. She also birdied No. 13. She also had five bogeys, one double bogey and nine pars during her first round. The second round saw Mouton post four birdies on her card. The round also included five bogeys and a double bogey. Her final round included 13 pars and five bogeys.
Senior Ana Rodriguez and Kaathi Gunasegar also competed for the Aggies. Rodriguez shot 22-over (80-74-78—232) and Gunasegar shot 32-over (85-78-79—242). The Aggies return to action October 20-21 when they compete in the UNCG Collegiate hosted by UNC Greensboro at Forest Oaks Country Club.
