GREENSBORO – Redshirt freshman Jason Holmes continued to rewrite the history of the North Carolina A&T men's track and field programs as a hurdler at a young age. On Saturday, Holmes ran a program-record 13.43 in the men's 110-meter hurdlers to finish second at the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
Holmes earned the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) men's track athlete of the week award for his efforts. Holmes won his second outdoor season honor after he won men's track athlete of the week on April 9. Holmes also earned a weekly honor during the indoor season.
In a thrilling race, Holmes finished second behind Houston's De'Vion Wilson, who finished the race in 13.38 after running a 13.59 to qualify for the final. Holmes's record-breaking performance toppled Rasheem Brown's 110H record of 13.53 set during the 2022 Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Houston's record-breaking performance helped him make strides in various rankings.
Holmes is now ranked fourth in the NCAA East Region in the 110H and 13th nationally. Holmes also took over the conference lead in the 110H. In addition, Holmes missed breaking the conference by .04 seconds. It is a mark that has stood for 20 years. In addition to Holmes's two outdoor weekly honors, the Aggies have won three other CAA weekly awards.
A&T women's track and field hurdler Lucheyona Weaver captured women's track athlete of the week on April 9. Senior 400 H Aveon Reid captured men's track athlete of the week on April 2, and Joseph Palmer received men's field athlete of the week on March 26. The Aggies will host the Aggie Invitational, May 3-4, at Marcus T. Johnson Track. It will be their second meet at Johnson Track after they hosted the Aggie Classic two weeks ago.
