PHILADELPHIA/CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Saturday was all about the ladies. Numerous North Carolina A&T women's outdoor track and field team athletes competed at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania. Others competed at the Charlotte Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.
The Aggies concluded the Charlotte Invitational with the 200-meter dash and the 4x400 relay, and they wrapped up the Penn Relays with performances in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, and shot put.
The 4x400 women's relay team of sophomore Pebbles Scott, graduate Ayoola Gbolade, junior MyKayla Perry, and graduate Jada Griffin took home first place in Charlotte in 3:39.58 during the last event of the day.
Earlier in the day, Griffin finished second in the 200m in 23:45, followed by Scott, who finished fifth in 24.07. Perry finished behind her teammate in sixth place in 24.81.
After finding the lowest qualifying time in the 100H on Friday (13.56) at the Penn Relays, graduate Paula Salmon ended the championship round in 13.32 for a second-place finish. Salmon went into the race ranked 15th in the nation (13.08). She finished behind Howard University's Darci Khan (13.18) on Saturday. Khan came into the weekend ranked 11th nationally. Salmon finished ahead of Texas A&M's Jaiya Covington, who entered the Penn Relays ranked No. 19.
Performing in the field, senior Kenady Wilson placed fourth in the high jump with a bound of 5-feet, 6 ½-inches, and Julieth Nwosu placed 10th in the shot put event with a throw of 49-feet, 6 ¼-inches.
Next weekend, May 5-6, the Aggies will get their first run at the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Walter J. Zable Stadium at Cary Field in Williamsburg, Va. The conference championships begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
