NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINESÂ
- The Aggies will try to continue their upward climb in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) standings after an exciting win at William & Mary on Sunday.Â
- The Aggies have won four straight on the road in CAA competition after Sunday's win. They are 4-1 on the road in the conference, but they return home having won once in four tries at Corbett Sports Center.Â
- A career performance from junior Marcus Watson highlighted A&T's win over W&M. Watson tied a career-high with 28 points as he made all five free throw attempts.Â
- Watson was 10-for-19 from the floor and 3-for-7 from 3-point range. He also added career highs in assists (7), steals (4), and five rebounds.Â
- The Aggies played three times last week and went 2-1, with Watson averaging 18.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals.
- Watson also shot 45.2 percent (19-for-42) from the floor and 83.3 percent (15-for-18) from the free throw line.Â
- A&T sophomore guard Kam Woods also had a fantastic week. He had two 20-point-plus games to bring him to eight for the season. Woods had 27 points in a win at Hampton last Monday, and 27 in a home loss to Towson.Â
- Woods averaged 24.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists in three games last week. He also shot 47 percent (24-for-51) from the field, 47.8 percent (11-for-23) from 3-point range and 69.6 percent (16-for-23) from the free throw line.Â
- The HBCU All-Star Game organization named A&T its HBCU Independent team of the week.Â
- The Aggies will try to take advantage of their homecourt this week, with the Drexel Dragons coming in on Thursday and the Monmouth Hawks coming to Aggieland on Saturday.Â
- The Aggies competition at home has not exactly been pushovers. Their three losses at home have included 18th-ranked College Charleston, UNC Wilmington, who at one time this season had a 15-game winning streak, and CAA preseason favorite Towson. A&T's only CAA win was a 61-59 win over Stony Brook on Jan. 14.Â
- The Aggies only shoot 41 percent at home in CAA action, but their biggest Achilles heel has been rebounding. Opponents have a plus-8.8 rebounding margin over A&T. In addition, CAA opponents are shooting 56.8 percent from 2-point range against the Aggies at Corbett.Â
- CAA head coaches predicted the Aggies to finish 11th during the preseason poll. The Aggies come into the week in sixth place at 5-4. There is a three-way tie for second at 6-2, leaving the Aggies a game and a half out of second. Drexel is among those 6-2 teams.
- Phillip Shumpert is the Aggies head coach on an interim basis. He took over the program for Will Jones in August. He missed three games with COVID but returned to earn the big win over UNCG.Â
- Shumpert has been a significant part in helping the Aggies recruit some of their talent.Â
- Shumpert took over on an interim basis in August. Shumpert has coached on many levels, including high school, Division II, junior college and Division I, and has head coaching experience on the junior college level for five years.Â
 SCOUTING THE DREXEL DRAGONS Â
- The Drexel/A&T matchup is a key one. The top four teams in the CAA tournament do not play until the third day on Sunday, March 4, in Washington, DC.Â
- The Dragons come into the game tied for second place, but an Aggies win would bring them to within a half-game of the Dragons.Â
- If the Aggies were to win, it would end the Dragons three-game winning streak. The streak started with a blowout win at Northeastern before two competitive home wins over Hampton and Delaware.Â
- Drexel's 77-74 homecoming win over Delaware came on Saturday. The Dragons shot an impressive 62.2 percent (23-for-37) from inside the 3-point arc, something A&T CAA opponents have done effectively at Corbett.Â
- Justin Moore led the way for the Dragons with 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the free throw line. Luke House and Amari Williams also scored in double figures. House finished with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 shooting from the line. Williams had 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting.Â
- Williams leads the Dragons in scoring (14.1), rebounding (8.3), blocked shots (2.2), steals (1.5) and field goal percentage (.528). The only other Dragon averaging double figures is Coletrane Washington at 10.3 points per game, and House leads the 3-point shooting for the Dragons at 38.2 percent. Washington has made the most threes for the Dragons with 38, shooting 34.2 percent.Â
- The Dragons are outstanding defensively. They have the best scoring defense in the conference (61.0) and rank 15th nationally. Drexel also takes care of the basketball, averaging only 10.8 turnovers per game, the best in the conference.Â
- Zach Spiker is in his seventh season with the Drexel men's basketball program. He is 88-111 at Drexel with one NCAA appearance. Spiker led the Dragons to the 2021 NCAA tournament after entering the tournament as a sixth seed.Â
- Spiker also spent seven seasons at Army, where he went 102-112, giving him a 190-223 career record (.460). In 2015-16, he led Army to a 19-14 record and a first-round appearance in the College Invitational Tournament (CIT).Â
- On Feb. 22, 2018, Spiker led Drexel to a 34-point comeback win against Delaware, the largest comeback in Division I history.Â
THE SERIESÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
- It will be the first meeting between A&T and Drexel.Â
- The Aggies will have seven first-time opponents in the CAA this season. They are 3-2 in those games thus far.Â
