NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINESÂ
- The Aggies will try to recover from a disappointing 79-67 loss to preseason Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) favorite Towson at home on Thursday.Â
- If the Aggies could have come away with the victory, they would have been ahead of the Tigers in the conference standings, making a significant statement for the Aggies in their inaugural season in the CAA.Â
- The Aggies had their chances in the game. A&T trailed by four on six occasions throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half. They even had two opportunities to cut Towson's lead to two but missed two layups on both occasions.Â
- The Tigers finally pulled away with a 10-0 run to take a 67-53 lead with 8:47 remaining in the game.Â
- It was another big night for sophomore guard Kam Woods. Woods scored 29 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field and 5-for-10 from 3-point range. It marked Woods' eighth 20-point-plus game of the season.Â
- It also marked the third time Woods has scored 20-plus points this season in back-to-back games. In his last six games, he averaged 23.7 points on 49 percent shooting from the field (49-for-100) and 45.6 percent from 3-point range (26-for-57).Â
- Woods ranks third in the league in scoring (19.3), and he leads the CAA in scoring when only conference games are considered at 22.3 points per game.Â
- A&T has had a perplexing start to its time in the CAA. The Aggies have been excellent on the road, with a 3-1 record in CAA play. But despite playing in one of the best home environments in the league, the Aggies are only 1-3 at Corbett Sports Center.Â
- But that is easily explained by the fact the Aggies home losses are to nationally-ranked College of Charleston, defending regular-season champion UNC Wilmington and CAA preseason favorite Towson. Â
- A&T has also survived and remains .500 in the league despite trailing by double figures in nine of their last 10 games. A&T is also 5-0 this season when they shoot less than 60 percent from the free throw line.Â
- Forward Marcus Watson has scored in double figures in four straight games. The last time he did not score in double figures came on Jan. 7 against UNCW when he went scoreless in the game.Â
- Watson is shooting 39 percent (39-for-100) from the field. But when his 3-for-32 3-point shooting in conference play goes away, Watson is 36-for-68 (.529) from the field in conference play. Â
- Phillip Shumpert is the Aggies head coach on an interim basis. He took over the program for Will Jones in August. He missed three games with COVID but returned to earn the big win over UNCG.Â
- Shumpert has been a significant part in helping the Aggies recruit some of their talent.Â
- Shumpert took over on an interim basis in August. Shumpert has coached on many levels, including high school, Division II, junior college and Division I, and has head coaching experience on the junior college level for five years.Â
SCOUTING THE WILLIAM & MARY TRIBE
- William & Mary presents another challenge to A&T with its post presence. Towson outscored the Aggies 36-16 in the paint and 18-5 in second-chance points.Â
- The Tribe features 6-foot-8, 220-pound Noah Collier. He averages 8.4 rebounds per game and shoots 47.4 percent from the floor.Â
- Another effective big for the Tribe is 6-9, 220-pound Ben Wright, who averages 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game on 52.5 percent shooting.Â
- W&M's leading scorer is 6-1 graduate guard Andres Nelson. Nelson averages 11.0 points per game on 44.8 percent shooting from the field, 41.7 percent from 3-point range and 77.3 percent from the line.Â
- The Tribe's sharpshooter is Gabe Dorsey. Dorsey is 59-for-133 (.444) from 3-point range and is the Tribe's second-leading scorer at 10.6 points per game.Â
- Dorsey is second in the league behind A&T's Woods in 3-pointers made per game (2.79). Dorsey, however, leads the CAA in 3-point shooting percentage over Woods, with Dorsey shooting 44.4 percent (at least 2.5 3-pointers made per game) and Woods shooting 38.8 percent.Â
- The Tribe is coming back-to-back blowout losses to No. 18 Charleston and Delaware. Both losses came on the road by an average margin of 27.5 points. Before the two blowout losses, the Tribe did upset UNCW on the road, 69-67, on Jan. 14.Â
- W&M will play its first home game since Jan. 11, when they defeated Hampton 81-65. Collier had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Nelson added 15 points.Â
- W&M head coach Dane Fischer leads the Tribe. Fischer is in his fourth season with the Tribe and holds a 41-60 record. In his first season (2019-20), he led the Tribe to a 21-11 record, including a 13-5 record in the CAA. The Trible finished second in the conference that season and won the CAA tournament, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the NCAA tournament.Â
- Fischer has served as an assistant coach at Williams College, Rider, Bucknell, and most recently, George Mason (2015-19). Â
 THE SERIES        Â
- It will be the first meeting between A&T and Wiliam & Mary.Â
- The Aggies will have seven first-time opponents in the CAA this season. They are 2-2 in those games thus far.Â
