NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINESÂ
- North Carolina A&T State University and Hampton University, two HBCUs, will face each other on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Hampton Convocation Center Monday night.Â
- A&T and Hampton are the only two HBCUs in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), which makes the day this game occurs significant for the league.Â
- The CAA is the only non-traditional HBCU conference in the nation, with more than one HBCU in its conference.Â
- Hampton and A&T have been attached at the hip in changing leagues over the past few years. Hampton left the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 2018 for the Big South Conference. The Pirates stayed there until 2022 before joining the CAA.Â
- A&T left the MEAC in 2020 to join the Big South before leaving in 2022 for the CAA, even though the Aggies played football in the Big South in 2022.Â
- The Aggies and the Pirates split last season's Big South matchups, with A&T winning 67-59 at home on Jan. 12 and the Pirates winning 93-82 at the Convocation Center on Feb. 16.Â
- The Aggies go into Hampton on a two-game winning streak after beating Stony Brook 61-59 at Corbett on Saturday. The Seawolves had a couple of chances at tip-ins on a missed free throw before the Aggies came away with the win.Â
- The Aggies found themselves down by double figures for the eighth straight game. The Aggies have surprisingly fought back in each game except at UTEP on Dec. 21 and at home against College of Charleston on Jan. 4.Â
- The Aggies have won three of those games, including overcoming a 10-point first-half deficit to SBU on Saturday.Â
- The Aggies can also win even when they don't hit free throws. The Aggies are 4-0 when they shoot less than 60 percent from the line.Â
- Marcus Watson has played a major role in the Aggies two-game winning streak. After going scoreless against UNC Wilmington on Jan. 7, Watson has combined to score 38 points and grab 15 rebounds on 17-for-36 (.472).Â
- Watson has those shooting numbers despite going 3-for-16 from 3-point range over the last two games. Watson did hit the biggest three of the game on Saturday, a pull-up on the break that cut the Seawolves lead to 57-56 with three minutes to play.Â
- Sophomore Kam Woods has developed into the Aggies floor leader. Woods has played more than 35 minutes in his last seven games, including 40 minutes in three of those games. Â
- In CAA games only, Woods leads the conference in scoring at 20.2 points per game in conference competition. He is 14th in the nation in 3-pointers made (52) and 3-pointers attempted (152).Â
- Phillip Shumpert is the Aggies head coach on an interim basis. He took over the program for Will Jones in August. He missed three games with COVID but returned to earn the big win over UNCG.Â
- Shumpert has been a significant part in helping the Aggies recruit some of their talent.Â
- Shumpert took over on an interim basis in August. Shumpert has coached on many levels, including high school, Division II, junior college and Division I, and has head coaching experience on the junior college level for five years.Â
 SCOUTING THE HAMPTON PIRATES Â
- Hampton has struggled in its first season in the CAA, but having an old rival like A&T coming to town could change the Pirates' fortunes.Â
- The Pirates have yet to win in 2023. Their last win came on Dec. 7 against Loyola University Maryland as they defeated the Greyhounds 66-61 at the Convocation Center. Hampton's other Division I win came against fellow HBCU Howard on Dec. 3 at the Convocation Center.Â
- Hampton is coming off an 81-65 loss to fellow Tidewater school William & Mary last Wednesday in Williamsburg, Va. The Pirates have lost all five of their CAA games by double figures.Â
- Deuce Russell led the Pirates with 21 points on 9-for-17 shooting against the Tribe. Jordan Nesbitt added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.Â
- Nesbitt leads the Pirates in scoring (14.1), rebounding (7.1), steals (1.2) and blocked shots (0.8). Nesbitt earned CAA co-player of the week honors on Dec. 5 after a 23-point, 8-rebound performance against Howard.Â
- Russell, a preseason CAA honorable mention selection, leads the Pirates in assists at 4.6 per game. He is also the team's second-leader scorer at 13.6 points per game.
- In last season's game against A&T in Hampton, Russell finished with 24 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 shooting from three. He also had seven assists and five rebounds.Â
- Hampton brings in the worst defense in the CAA, giving up 78.9 points per game. They also give up a league-high 40.1 rebounds per game.Â
- The Pirates are led by Edward Joyner Jr., in his 14th season at the university. He has had multiple successes there, reaching the NCAA tournament three times. His last visit to the tournament came in 2016.Â
- Joyner has been to four other postseasons in his career, including the CBI in 2014 and 2017, the NIT in 2018 and they reached the CIT semifinals in 2019.Â
 THE SERIES        Â
- Hampton and the Aggies will play for the 68th time on the court, with Hampton leading the series, 37-29.Â
- A&T is 17-10 against Hampton in the CIAA, 11-26 against the Pirates in the MEAC and they were 1-1 against them in the Big South.Â
- Hampton is 20-11 against the Aggies at home.Â
