NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINESÂ
- The Aggies did it again. They had secured another come-from-behind win in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) conference play as they rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit to defeat the Elon Phoenix 80-71 Wednesday night at Schar Center.Â
- The win snapped the Aggies two-game losing streak and improved their record to 2-1 on the road against CAA competition.Â
- The Aggies come-from-behind efforts are not new. The Aggies have trailed by double-figures in the second half in seven straight games.Â
- In each game outside of UTEP and College of Charleston, the Aggies have fought back to get to within striking distance of winning the game.Â
- At Hofstra, they did pull off a 13-point rally to win 81-79 at the buzzer. On Wednesday, a 3-pointer at the buzzer in the first half by Duncan Powell propelled the Aggies into a terrific second-half showing. They outscored the Phoenix 41-25 while shooting 53.8 percent from the floor.Â
- This season, it was A&T's best second-half shooting percentage against a Division I opponent.Â
- Aggies forward Marcus Watson played a massive role in the Aggies rally. After going scoreless against UNC Wilmington last Saturday, he scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the second half on 6-for-8 shooting. He scored five points in an 8-0 Aggies run down the stretch that put Elon away for good.Â
- After starting Duncan Powell against UNCW last Saturday, interim head coach Phillip Shumpert returned Powell to his customary reserve role against Elon.Â
- He strives there. After scoring only five points on 1-for-6 shooting against the UNCW Seahawks, Powell came off the bench to score 14 points and secure nine rebounds on 4-for-4 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 shooting from the line.Â
- In CAA play, Powell has been magnificent. Powell, the reigning two-time CAA rookie of the week, is averaging 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 steals on 60 percent shooting from the field (24-for-40), 5-for-10 shooting from 3-point range and 67.7 percent shooting (21-for-31) from the line.Â
- Speaking of CAA play, sophomore guard Kam Woods is the conference's leading scorer in CAA games only. Woods is averaging 20.4 points per game against conference competition, including 30 points against 23rd-ranked Charleston and 24 points against the second-best team in the league, UNCW.Â
- Austin Johnson, the Aggies 6-foot-9 forward, returned to form on Wednesday night. He posted nine points and 12 rebounds for his third double-figure rebounding game of the season.Â
- Johnson missed five games with an ankle injury, returning to action against UNCW last Saturday. He had only one point and two rebounds in that contest before breaking out against the Phoenix. Â
- Phillip Shumpert is the Aggies head coach on an interim basis. He took over the program for Will Jones in August. He missed three games with COVID but returned to earn the big win over UNCG.Â
- Shumpert has been a significant part in helping the Aggies recruit some of their talent.Â
- Shumpert took over on an interim basis in August. Shumpert has coached on many levels, including high school, Division II, junior college and Division I, and has head coaching experience on the junior college level for five years.Â
 SCOUTING THE STONY BROOK SEAWOLVESÂ
- The Seawolves find themselves near the top of the CAA standings at 3-1 after being picked to finish ninth in the preseason.Â
- They are coming off an impressive 67-66 win over Drexel at home on Thursday night. Stony Brook leading scorer Tyler Stephenson-Moore hit the go-ahead jump shot with nine seconds remaining to account for the one-point win.Â
- Stephenson-Moore finished with 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting. Frankie Policelli added 16 points and 14 rebounds as he recorded his sixth double-double of the season.Â
- Stephenson-Moore and Policelli are 1,2 in scoring for the Seawolves, with Stephenson-Moore averaging 15.2 points per game and Policelli scoring 11.9 points per game and securing 9.7 rebounds per game.Â
- Policelli leads the conference in total rebounds (165), rebounds per game, double-doubles, and defensive rebounds per game (8.2). Stephenson-Moore is second in the league in minutes at 37 minutes and 45 seconds per game.Â
- The Aggies and the Seawolves have played one common opponent on the CAA schedule thus far. The Aggies lost to the Northeastern Huskies 88-76 in Boston on Dec. 29. Meanwhile, the Seawolves defeated the Huskies 65-61 in Boston two days later.Â
- Stony Brook has made it tough on its opponents to score this season. The Seawolves are second in the CAA in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 42.1 percent shooting.Â
- They play good defense while not fouling. They only commit 14 fouls per game, 17th-best in the nation. They are also No. 1 in the CAA in defensive rebounding at 26.8 per game.Â
- Geno Ford is in his fifth season as the head coach at Stony Brook. Ford has compiled a 54-50 (.519) record at Stony Brook, earning a 20-win season (20-13) during his first full season in 2019-20.Â
- Ford has also made head coaching stops at Bradley, Kent State and Muskingum. He made two NIT appearances and one CIT appearance in three seasons at Kent State. He also went to the CIT at Bradley. In 14 seasons, he has a 219-205 (.517) record.Â
