EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T doubles duo of Manuela Sofia Jimenez and Cielo Tapia-Cruz won a doubles match as the Aggies fell to Anderson University, 4-0, Monday at Dudley High School.
Pairing up for the first time, Jimenez and Tapia-Cruz defeated Anna Greer and Katie Robeson, 7-6 (6). Greer and Robeson came into the match ranked No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional DII doubles.
"I'm happy that Cielo and I were able to win doubles today," Jimenez said. "She stayed calm and was the rock in the most important moments.
Both coaches were essential for our success, gave us the right indications at the right time."
Despite winning at the No. 2 position, the Aggies lost the doubles point after Anderson won at the No. 3 position by forfeit, and Catherine Blouin and Laura Alvarez Tello defeated Florielvis Hurtado Pernaleta and Marlene Estenssoro Pineda 6-3 at the No. 1 position to take a 1-0 lead.
Anderson took a 2-0 lead after a forfeit at the No. 6 position. Trinity Oliver lost to Val Borda 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. The Trojans clinched the match at the No. 2 position after Greer defeated Estenssoro Pineda 6-0, 6-0.
The rest of the matches went unfinished. Tapia Cruz played in her second collegiate match on Monday. She won the first set 6-1. She led 3-1 in the second when the match finished.
Jimenez won her first set against Alvarez Tello 6-4 but trailed 4-1 in the second when the match finished at No. 4. Hurtado Pernaleta lost the first set 6-1 and trailed 5-2 in the second before the match ended at the No. 1.
