CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Carolina A&T looked dominant at No. 1 singles and won the doubles point convincingly, yet still lost a season-opening men's tennis heartbreaker to Queens University Friday at the Howard Levine Tennis Center.
The Aggies looked solid in their opener despite playing three freshmen, including Eder Blanco, who won his first career collegiate singles match.
A&T started by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Esteban Lopez and senior Vasil Ivanov defeated Queens' Edoardo Bottino and Edoardo Cecere 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Queens evened things in doubles as Royals duo Yoan Roussinov and Euan Lynes defeated freshmen Ian Pedersen and Ethan Baly 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
But the Aggies took the point when freshmen Jorge Perez and Eder Blanco defeated Win Steveker and Jan Malmon 6-4.
In singles play, Malmon 6-3, 6-0 defeated senior Nolan Martino at the No. 6 singles to tie the match at 1. Lopez won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4 over Bottino, as the Aggies reclaimed the lead.
Blanco gave A&T a 3-1 lead after a 6-3, 6-4 win against Laurenz Blickwede at the No. 3. But Queens tied the match at three after Steveker defeated Perez 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, and Cecere defeated Ivanov 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Roussinov defeated Pedersen 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (6) at the No. 5 singles position to win the match for Queens.
