EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T men's and women's track and field is under new leadership and in a new conference but hope to keep the same winning tradition going.
The Aggies and new director of track and field programs, Allen Johnson, released the A&T men's and women's indoor track and field schedule on Friday. It includes nine regular-season track meets before the Colonial Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships, and NCAA indoor championships get underway.
The Aggie women are coming off a Big South Conference indoor championship. The men had a third-place finish in the conference last season.
In 2023, the season will begin with the HBCU Showcase Challenge at the Armory's New Balance Track & Field Center in New York, New York. The meet will take place Jan. 14. It pays tribute to the rich history of America's HBCU institutions.
The Aggies will make two trips to Blacksburg, Va. The Aggies will participate in the Virginia Tech Invitational, Jan. 20-21, and the Virginia Tech Challenge, Feb. 17-18. The Aggies last trip to Virginia Tech came on Jan. 25, 2019. The Aggies came away with eight first-place finishes.
Jan. 20-21 will also see the Aggies compete at the University of South Carolina's Carolina Challenge. It will be the first of four trips to the state as the Aggies will compete at USC and Clemson University two times apiece. A&T returns to South Carolina for the USC Indoor Open. The Aggies came away with three wins at last season's USC Indoor.
The two meets at Clemson start with the Bob Pollock Invitational, Jan. 27-28. Graduate Paula Salmon came away with the 60-meter hurdle win last season. The Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson takes place Feb. 10-11. Last season, the Aggies had a runner break a facility record, another tie a U-20 world record and Salmon ran at the time, the second-fastest women's 60H collegiate time in history.
Two of A&T's meets occur at Winston-Salem's JDL FastTrack, starting with the Camel City Invitational, Feb. 3-4. The JDL DMR Invitational is Feb. 17-18.
The Aggies, who have dominated conference championships since 2017, will get their first crack at the CAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Feb. 22-23, in Virginia Beach, Va. The Aggie men have won four out of the last five conference indoor championships in which they've competed. The women have won five straight indoor conference championships, including last year's Big South indoor title.
