Aggies Lose Heartbreaker at Home

Last-second three ends A&T's lengthy home winning steak against conference opponents.

CAMPBELL STATISTICAL LEADERS: G Messiah Thompson (20 pts, 3 assists, 7-for-10 FGs, 5-for-7 3-pt FGs); F Cedric Henderson (18 pts, 7-for-13 FGs, 4-for-7 3-pt FGs); G Jordan Whitfield (17 pts, 6-for-12 FGs, 5-for-10 3-pt FGs).

 A&T STATISTICAL LEADERS: C Collin Smith (22 pts, 9 rebs., 4 offensive, 8-for-12 FGs); G Demetric Horton (20 pts, 7 rebs., 8-for-13 FGs, 4-for-7 3-pt FGs).

WHY A&T DID NOT GET THE "W": A huge defensive mistake. The Aggies led 72-70 with 2.1 seconds remaining in the game. Campbell's Ricky Clemons took the ball out from the far right corner. With no one in his sight to deny the basketball, Clemons threw the ball to the opposite side of the floor to a wide-open Jordan Whitfield, who swished a three from the deep corner to give the Camels the lead with 0.6 seconds remaining.

WHY CAMPBELL DID GET THE W: 3-point shooting. Campbell shot 15-for-31 from beyond the arc. The Aggies dominated everywhere else. A&T had fewer turnovers, more rebounds, more second-chance points, but the Camels used 3-point shooting to be the ultimate equalizer. That was the case down to the very last second.

CRUCIAL: Whitfield's previous go-ahead 3-point attempt rattle in out and out, leaving Camels and Aggies scrambling for the rebound. The ball eventually went out of bounds with 1.6 seconds remaining. The referees originally went to the replay monitor to see who deflected the ball out of bounds. When they left the monitor, they added an additional 0.5 seconds to the clock and gave the Camels possession of the basketball. The extra time proved essential for the Camels last-second heroics.

EAST GREENSBORO – Campbell Guard Jordan Whitfield hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining as the Fighting Camels defeated North Carolina A&T 73-72 in Big South Conference men's basketball action Saturday night at Corbett Sports Center.

It was a heartbreaking night for the Aggies, who saw their impressive 29-game home winning streak against conference opponents, a streak that lasted nearly five years, come to an end at 29 straight games.

The loss was also a step back in the standings as the Aggies (9-11, 4-2 Big South) as the Aggies came into the game a half-game out of first place in the Big South northern division, but the Aggies do get first-place Longwood in Farmville, Va., on Wednesday.

"We had a defensive lapse, and that's on us," said A&T coach Will Jones. "We had no reason to leave him. We left him, and he capitalized. In conference games, when you look across the landscape, one-point wins, overtime, everybody is finding it hard to win. He's the best shooter on their team, and he's wide open for the shot. That's on us."

Campbell had not played in Corbett in 17 years, and the long layoff was well worth the wait. Each team had a double-figure lead in the game before the last-minute theatrics.

The Aggies found themselves down 65-54 with nine minutes to play, and they were down 68-58 with 7:56 remaining before a combination of Kameron Langley and Demetric Horton started to bring the Aggies back.

Langley scored on two tough layups to ignite an 11-2 run, and Horton ended it with a 15-footer and a three to get the Aggies to within one, 70-69, with 3:37 to play.

The two teams spent the next three minutes missing shots before the Aggies finally got the ball in the post to center Collin Smith. Smith went to work on Campbell's Jèsus Carralero as he spun into the lane and put a soft touch on a short jumper that fell through the basket to give the Aggies a 71-70 lead with 40 seconds remaining.

After Campbell forward Cedric Henderson, Jr. missed a layup, Langley grabbed the rebound, and Whitfield immediately fouled him. Langley made the first but was short on the second, which eventually gave Campbell two shots at winning the game.

"We've got to make two free throws, and we can't give up a three. That's just the bottom line," said Jones. "We made two mistakes at the end, and it cost us."

The Aggies jumped out to a 10-0 lead to open the game and took their largest lead at 30-17 when Smith hit an open jumper in the lane with 10:52 remaining in the first half. A&T even led 39-28 on a Jeremy Robinson 3-pointer with six minutes to play in the first half.

But Messiah Thompson hit two threes during a 15-5 Campbell run that sent the Camels into the locker room down only one, 44-43, at the half.

QUOTABLE: "Campbell came in here and shot the lights out. They won't hit 15 threes in a game the rest of the season in a game. But they came in here with their backs against the wall, and they shot the ball like that. We couldn't consistently get stops in the first half because of those threes."

 GAME NOTES

  • The Aggies saw their 29-game home winning streak against conference opponents come to an end Saturday night. The Aggies last home loss to a conference foe came on Feb. 27, 2017, against Bethune-Cookman.
  • The streak started with an improbable win over N.C. Central as the Eagles sought an undefeated season in conference play, and the Aggies were trying to win their first conference game of the year.
  • The last time the Camels were in Corbett on Dec. 11, 2004, they won on a last-second shot by Anthony Atkinson. Ironically, it ended a 35-game road losing streak for the Camels.
  • Fifteen 3-pointers are the most the Aggies have given up in a game since Illinois hit 17 on Nov. 25, 2020.
  • Collin Smith's 22 points and Demetric Horton's 20 marked the second time this season two different Aggies have scored 20-plus in the same game. Marcus Watson and Horton did against Samford on Nov. 26.
  • Smith's 22 points are a season-high. His career-high is 23 points scored on Nov. 23, 2019, against College of Charleston when Smith was playing for the University of Central Florida.
  • Saturday marked just the fourth time in 23 games that coach Jones has suffered a loss in Corbett.
