FARMVILLE, Va. -- The North Carolina A&T men's basketball team looked poised to continue its road wizardry Wednesday night at Willett Hall against the Longwood Lancers.
But some late hot shooting from the Lancers and an unfortunate technical foul in the late stages of the game helped Longwood earn a 79-71 win over the Aggies.
In a game that pitted the top two teams from the Big South Conference's Northern Division, the Lancers (14-5, 6-0 Big South) remained undefeated in league play by winning their seventh straight game. Meanwhile, the Aggies (9-12, 4-3 Big South) lost their second straight and moved into a second-place tie with Campbell in the North.
Three minutes into the second half, the Aggies took a 42-30 lead on a 3-pointer from graduate guard
Kameron Langley (High Point, N.C.). The Lancers scored the next six points before senior forward
Jeremy Robinson (Raleigh, N.C.) put the Aggies up nine with a 3-pointer from the baseline at the 14:41 mark.
A&T maintained its nine-point lead when Robinson hit two free throws to make it a 49-40 game. But over the next 4 1/2 minutes, the Lancers slowly cut into that lead, knocking it down to four, 55-51, on a Deshaun Wade jump shot.
Then, the Lancers found their rhythm from the perimeter. After connecting on only one of their first 10 3-pointers, Justin Hill got Longwood going with a deep three to make it a one-point game, 55-54 with 7:23 to play.
Graduate guard
Tyler Maye (Farmville, N.C.) had a quick response as he went baseline, took a pass from junior guard
Demetric Horton (Raleigh, N.C), and scored on a layup while being fouled. He completed the 3-point play to give the Aggies a 58-54 advantage.
From there, the Lancers went on an 11-3 run. It included a Jordan Perkins layup that gave the Lancers a 62-61 lead with 4:02 remaining.
It was Longwood's first lead since it was 10-8 at the 15:10 mark of the first half. The Lancers capped the run with an Isaiah Wilkins steal and layup to take a 64-61 lead. Â
Two free throws from center
Collin Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) got the Aggies back on track, but a Wade 3-pointer pushed the Lancers lead back to four.
But after a Horton jumper in the lane and two Lancers free throws, the game turned in Longwood's favor for good.
After a missed Horton 3-pointer, Smith and Wilkins battled for the rebound as bodies collided. Smith was called for the loose ball foul, much to the dislike of the Aggies sideline.
A referee called a technical foul on A&T, essentially sending the Lancers to the line for four free throws after the foul call on Smith. The Lancers hit all four to take a 73-65 lead with 1:28 to play.
Smith answered with a 3-pointer, but late free throws proved too much for the Aggies to overcome.
Horton scored in double figures for the fourth straight game and notched his second double-double in three games as he finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists on 3-for-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Smith, who played only 21 minutes because of foul trouble, still scored 12 points. Robinson scored on his two 3-point attempts and ended the night with 11.
Leslie Nkereuwem led the Lancers with 24 points on 10-for-12 shooting from the free throw line.
