EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T volleyball bounced back after Friday's night heartbreaking loss to American to win over Norfolk State in three sets (25-12, 25-19, 25-16) Saturday at Corbett Sports Center.
Edie Brewer (6-0, GR, setter, West Chester, Ohio) continues to record double-doubles. She has a double-double in every match this season after recording 16 assists and 10 digs against the Spartans. Shaylynn Hall (6-1, SR, middle blocker, Raleigh, N.C.) led the team with nine kills and seven blocks with a .500 hitting percentage.
Addy Warfield (5-9, JR, setter, Winter Springs, Fla.) recorded a team-high 17 assists and a match-high five services aces to go along with seven digs. Courteney Pitt (6-1, GR, outside hitter, Farmville, N.C.) recorded five kills, and Andrea Laboy-Rivera (5-5, SR, libero, Coamo, Puerto Rico) recorded seven digs.
A&T (3-2) got off to a fast start by posting a .400 hitting percentage in the first set. Warfield had two aces, and Pitt had two kills during a 5-0 run that gave the Aggies a 24-11 lead. A service error by NSU's Caris Cross gave the Aggies a one-set lead.
The Spartans (0-3) fought harder in the second set, tying the frame at 16. A Spartans service error and three straight attack errors pushed the Aggies lead to 20-16. An Aggies service error broke up the run, but two more Spartans attack errors, and a Hannah Howell (6-0, FR, OH, St. Louis Park, Minn.) kill gave the Aggies a comfortable 23-17.
After two straight NSU points, the Aggies ended the set with a Spartans service error and a Fatimah Shabazz (6-0, R-SR, RS, Cincinnati, Ohio) kill.
The Aggies hit .314 in the third set and took over the set with a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. Morgan Allen (5-5, SO, DS, Charlotte, N.C.) had two aces during the run. Then, a 5-0 run led by two Mallory Porcher (6-0, JR, MB, Orlando, Fla.) kills gave the Aggies a 24-15 lead. Porcher ended the set and match with a kill.
Shonte Seale led the Spartans with 10 kills. Cross finished with 18 assists, and Nicole Rodriguez finished with 13 digs.
