EAST GREENSBORO – Two North Carolina A&T players earned spots on the Aggie-Spartan Invitational all-tournament team as the Aggies closed out the invitational with a four-set loss to co-host UNC Greensboro (25-11, 25-20, 22-25, 26-24) Saturday night at Corbett Sports Center.  

Shaylynn Hall (6-1, SR, middle blocker, Raleigh, N.C.) and Edie Brewer (6-0, GS, setter, West Chester, Ohio) earned all-tournament honors. Hall led the team in three matches this weekend with 1.17 blocks per set to go along with a 2.50 kills average and a .434 hitting percentage. Brewer averaged 4.83 assists, 1.42 kills, 2.42 digs and 0.50 blocks with three double-doubles.

Hall led the Aggies (3-3) against UNCG with a match-high 13 kills and added four blocks with a .409 hitting percentage. Niaya Sawtelle (6-0, FR, outside hitter, Stuart, Fla.) added 10 kills, and Mallory Porcher (6-0, JR, middle blocker, Orlando, Fla.) added five kills and six blocks, including two solo blocks.  

"Shaylynn had a really solid performance," said A&T coach Hal Clifton said. Her offense and defense have been tremendous the last two weeks. 

She is starting to find her groove. I'm so happy for her and Edie for making the all-tournament team."

Brewer and Addy Warfield (5-9, JR, setter, Winter Springs, Fla.) each recorded 17 assists, and Brewer added 11 digs for her sixth consecutive double-double this season. She also added three kills and two blocks. Hannah Howell (6-0, FR, outside hitter, St. Louis Park, Minn.) recorded six kills and eight digs. Andrea Laboy-Rivera (5-5, SR, libero, Coamo, Puerto Rico) added 10 digs, five assists and two service aces.

"Overall, we had a good day," said Clifton. "I wish the win-loss column reflected what we did this weekend. We played very well this morning and were firing on all cylinders. Tonight we were late getting started, but once we did get going, we battled UNCG.

A&T did get off to a slow start, hitting just -.0125 in the first set to fall behind 1-0 to the Spartans. Unfortunately, UNCG also took the second set before the Aggies came alive. 

Kills from Hall and Howell gave the Aggies a 20-16 lead in the third. A 3-0 run by the Spartans (5-1) made it a 20-19 set. Howell and Porcher pushed the lead to three. The two teams traded points before Grey Breen smacked down back-to-back kills to get the Spartans back to within one, 23-22. 

But Macenzie Richards (6-0, SR, RS, Pickerington, Ohio) scored on a kill, and UNCG's Taylor Robertson missed fired on an attack to give the Aggies the set, cutting UNCG's match lead to 2-1.  

A&T looked poised to take the Spartans to a fifth set. Hall aided the Aggies during a 3-0 run that included scoring on a kill and two block assists to give the Aggies a 24-23 lead. UNCG escaped the fifth set as Jocelyn Carter earned a kill, followed by a Hall attack error and a Stephan Meysembourg ace to end the set and the match. 

"Our team is going to continue to get better," said Clifton. "I would like to personally thank our fans for coming out this weekend. It made for such a great environment. The crowd's energy is something we feed off. We love our Aggie fans, and we want them to keep coming out to matches."

 White led the Spartans with 11 kills. Gabriela McHugh added 41 assists, and Jenna Wiggs finished with 13 digs.
