Kashon Baker: "It took me longer than expected, but I'm appreciative."

Kashon Baker speaks at the Aggies weekly Monday press conference.

North Carolina A&T head coach Sam Washington opening statement… "It's much easier being here after a win. First, let me tip my hat to coach Oliver and his staff. I thought he brought in a worthy opponent. The growth that they have made from last year to this year is quite remarkable. As far as we go, I thought we were able to go back and play our brand of football which is making chicken. We were able to stop the run, we held them to, I think, 52 yards rushing. On the flip side of that coin, we rushed for 250-plus yards. Another thing – protect the football. I thought Jalen did a wonderful job managing the game. He controlled the football and we had zero turnovers. Winning the kicking game – I thought we did well with that. The coverage was good, we made a couple plays. Jacob (Roberts) blocked a punt and scored a touchdown for us. Along with that, the onside kick. He was able to recover that so we made some plays on special teams as well. That was the highlight of it, per se, but another thing I was very pleased with the offensive line play. I thought we knocked them off the ball. We got creases and running lanes and that was very good. Defensively, it was good to have those guys back up front. It was a noticeable difference in everything because of their vertical play and attacking the quarterback during the pass. I thought we did a very good job chasing him. We didn't do a very good job of corralling him, but we knocked him off his spot many times and that makes it a lot easier to defend when the quarterback is running for his life. So those things stood out for me. Another one was penalties, we're still not doing well there. I think we had nine – five offense and four defense. We have to do a better job there. We cannot beat ourselves and right now we're not doing a very good job of it."

Coach Washington on noticing difference between MEAC and Big South officials… "I thought (Big South officials) were a lot more liberal than the MEAC. They'll allow you to play and that, I'm grateful for. The targeting, eh, I didn't quite agree with the one particularly with Amir (McNeil) and honestly their kid too. I didn't think either one of those should've been considered as targeting, but that was the rule and so that's what it was."

Coach Washington on using Howard tape to gauge Robert Morris… "I think so. You can get a gauge, but Howard does some things differently than we do so it's not a complete assessment. One thing I will say, they're hard to reach on offense. Their linemen are very quick and they get flat in a hurry and work their way up and that's new to us. We're going to have to adjust to little schemes like that and defensively, they play multiple fronts. They'll jump in an even front and then jump in an odd front disguising coverages so we're going to have to be very disciplined with our eyes."

Coach Washington on overall grade from Saturday… "C-plus. We honestly can play much better than we are right now and that's our goal. It's not particularly that game, it's about getting better each week and we're going to put a lot of emphasis on that this week. It's not about who you play, it's about how well you play."

Coach Washington on character of Big South… "I think they throw to run. A lot of teams run to throw. I think that's going to be one of the biggest differences defensively. The multiple fronts for our offense, they're going to see a lot of even jumping into odd, odd jumping into even which we rarely saw in the MEAC."

Coach Washington on RMU giving up 254 yards passing last week… "I'd say they didn't defend the pass very well, but that doesn't affect us. We're a run team. We're going to run the ball and we run to pass. If the opportunity is out there, we're going to take advantage of those opportunities, but we're going to run the ball."

Coach Washington on Jah-Maine Martin's time coming… "Oh, I know it's coming. I'm not going to panic, I'm not going to be concerned, I'm not going to worry about it. It's going to happen. It's just when."

Coach Washington on where Martin's struggles are stemming from… "I'll say that the opportunities have not been there and I will say this, you play like you practice. He's been nursing an ankle and that limits his practice play and as a coach, I'll say it every day of the week, you play like you practice, so if you don't practice, that's what you get, but we're a team. We've got his back. We'll hold him up until he's ready."
Coach Washington on Kashon Baker's performance… "Last week I congratulated him. I think it's all about his approach to the game and his approach to practice and the way he conducts himself not only on the field, but off the field. That young man has grown and has become a professional in my mind and I think it's carried over into his style of play."

Coach Washington on how first win impacts Fowler's confidence… "I hope it does a lot for his confidence. I hope it does a lot for all of our confidence. We play to win. I don't care who we're playing, when we're playing, where we're playing, we play to win so as long as he protects the football and manages the game well, we should be successful."

Coach Washington on any injuries sustained Saturday… "None. None that are major (knocks on wood.) This is the first week that's happened so if it's the Lord's will, we'll have everyone returning."

Coach Washington on Central staying in a two-high safety look defensively… "Well actually that's what the film said would happen. Two-high safety look with seven people in the box and say, 'run the ball.'"

Coach Washington on if Central touchdown was against backups… "It was, but that's still no excuse. With excuses come regrets, that's a regret. It was poor angles, poor tackling, poor judgment of the ball. It's a lot of things we could have and should have done better and it's not acceptable."

Coach Washington on key returners… "We are anticipating the return of D.J. Crossen and Amir. We've been playing, pretty much, without both corners the entire season. They're a large part of what we do because they can play man, have experience and don't need much help as often."

Coach Washington on confidence with Brown as kicker… "I call him 'money.' I do. That young man is amazing. His confidence and the way he believes in himself, we put a lot of pressure on him almost daily in practice. How much we're going to run after practice is going to be based on where he kicks the field goal and we start at 47 and go back as far as 52, 55 and he's quite accurate."

Coach Washington on where he found Brown… "Lexington. He's a local guy and we're just happy to have him. He came in for the visit, him and his family, and I thought we connected right away and the deal was signed, sealed and he has delivered."

Andrew "Money" Brown
Brown on staying even-keeled in midst of kicking issues… "We just, in practice, forget about those plays. I trust those guys – John (Davis) and Mike (Rivers) – I trust them to snap and hold well and just do my thing and swing and kick and if it goes in, it goes in. We just work on it every day in practice and even when we go to the game field, that's what we're doing all day."

Brown on difference kicking at home vs on the road… "No, it's just another game. If you're playing at home, you have your home crowd cheering you on and if you're on the road, you've got your crowd still there just like it's a home game."

Brown on how he chose A&T… "They were the first school to really reach out to me and coach Wash and coach Shawn came up to me and said this is where they wanted me and since then I've enjoyed every bit of it."

Brown on high school successes… "I believe I had good success. I was All-American my freshman year and I think I made all-county my junior and senior year and I enjoyed them as a kicker. It was fun."

Brown on being at A&T… "It's been a blast coming to a winning school. It's amazing compared to high school."
Brown on a couple kickoffs going out of bounds… "I was trying to play a little too close to the sideline or to the numbers and they ended up going out of bounds and so you just move on from there. I work on them in practice, but they went out of bounds and it was unfortunate."

Brown on kicking range… "Depending on the day, if I have the wind at my back, maybe 56 and in probably. Wind in my face, yeah, I'd say 52 and in I feel great."

Brown on coaches' confidence causing pressure… "It doesn't bother me. I just go out and do what I do in practice. If we need a kick, you go out, you make it and go kick off. It's not any different."

Brown on how often the guys have had to run in practice because he missed… "Not very often. I'd say maybe one or two times."

Kashon Baker
Baker on touchdown run… "It was designed that way, but the cutback, that was all me. It was an off-tackle play and they wanted me to take it outside, but when I saw the safety overplaying me, I see the cutback lane. The safety took himself out of the play and then they just had to catch me after that."

Baker on 40-yard speed… "I'd say about 4.4."

Baker on if he expects performances like Saturday… "I expect to get my 100 yards this week. I had in on my mind. I really wanted 150,that was my goal. I got 139 so I was content with it after this performance."

Baker on running game… "Shout out to the O-line on getting me my first 100. Everything was going good for me. Just doing my job, that's all I really was doing."

Baker on his running style… "I'd say quick, elusive, I'm really stronger than what people give me credit for. I know it's going to take more than one to get me down, I can guarantee you that."

Baker on if this is what he dreamed of in high school… "I always expected myself to play good. It took me a little longer than expected, I had to get out of my own way a little bit, but right now I'm just trying to gain and maintain."

Baker on years of hard work finally paying off… "It feels good. You just reap what you sow. It took me longer than what it takes someone else, but I'm appreciative, I'm thankful for it. All the journey I've been through, it's just a blessing."

Baker on relationship in running back room… "We kind of coach ourselves. That's how it's been since I got here. Tarik (Cohen), he showed me what to do, Jamari (Smith) and Amos (Williams) – and we just take what we have and pass it on whatever need to be heard, we just pass it on to one another."

Jacob Roberts
Roberts on the blocked punt… "It was a regular return. I'm always rushing the punter every return we have. Coach always tells us that special teams is about being special for one play. That's what I was thinking in my mind – being special for one play – I came free and made it happen."

Roberts on how it opened up… "The person protecting didn't block me, so I went straight for the ball."
Roberts on defensive performance… "Defense played good. Everyone did their job. Our number one key for every game is to stop the run. I feel like we did a good job stopping the run. The D-line played well. We got the job done."

Roberts on pride he takes on NCCU not scoring a touchdown for 10-plus quarters… "We really didn't want them to score, but it happens. Something good happens, we keep playing, something bad happens, we keep playing, so it happens. It's football, it's life, we have to move on from it. Next play."
Roberts on first Big South game… "I feel like it's going to be a good experience. I know they're going to bring something to the table. We're up for the challenge and we'll be ready to go."

Roberts on if A&T can hold RMU to less rushing than Howard did… "Yes, sir, that's what we're going to try to do. Our goal is to stop the run so one thing we're going to do is try our best to stop the run."
