GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T head football coach Shawn Gibbs has named two new assistants to his staff on Tuesday. Alvance Robinson will coach wide receivers, and Charles Cheek is the new outside linebackers coach.
Robinson brings eight years of coaching experience, including most recently serving as the offensive coordinator at the University of West Florida in 2024. Robinson returned to UWF following a stretch (2019-21) as the wide receivers coach previously. Robinson's first tenure was highlighted by the program's 2019 NCAA Division II national championship season.
"He's an excellent coach," said Gibbs. "He has an extensive knowledge of wide receiver play from a developmental standpoint, and I think he'll help our guys grow as men and as players."
Under Robinson's leadership, the Argonaut offense helped the team to a 7-3 overall record and a 5-2 finish in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), securing an appearance in the GSC championship game. UWF ranked second in the GSC in scoring offense and points per game (33.0), showcasing its prowess with a school-record 70-point performance and the largest margin of victory in program history (70).
Robinson also boasts experience at both the FCS and professional levels.
Before returning to West Florida, he spent the 2023 season as the wide receivers coach for the DC Defenders, who play out of the nation's capital. He helped the organization capture the 2023 XFL North Division Championship (the franchise now competes in the United Football League). He also spent a season at Gardner Webb University (2021) as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.
Robinson began his coaching career at the Division III level with Marietta College (2015-17) and then moved to Division II at Davenport University (2017-19). He began coaching after playing professionally for seven years, including one year in the Canadian Football League and six in the American Football League.
He chose Alabama State University to earn his degree and play college football. He earned an undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies. He is the program's single-season touchdown record holder (12).
Meanwhile, Cheek returns to Aggieland after spending time with the A&T program from 2011-15, working with linebackers and serving as a defensive quality control coach. Cheek brings a unique perspective to the A&T staff with eight years of high school coaching experience, including his most recent role at Starr's Mill High School in Fayetteville, Ga., where he has served as defensive coordinator, health/physical education teacher, and head boys track coach since 2024.
"Coach Cheek is somebody I've had a lot of history with. I was actually his position coach in college, and then he [was a graduate assistant] here at A&T," said Gibbs. "He's got a lot of knowledge on how to deal with these kids and relate to them. I think he'll do a great job of developing them as men and players."
Cheek also has two years of experience at Southern University as an assistant coach. Before beginning his coaching career, Cheek was a standout student-athlete at Grambling State, securing team captain honors in 2010. He played multiple positions, including tight end, running back, and fullback, and helped pave the way for a rushing attack that produced 1,466 yards in 2010. He also earned President's List honors in 2007 and 2009.
Cheek earned his bachelor's degree in business management from Grambling in 2011 and later completed a master's degree in sports administration at North Carolina A&T in 2015. He also holds a master's of education and an education specialist degree in special education from the University of West Georgia.
