TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The North Carolina A&T Aggies dropped both games of Saturday's baseball doubleheader against Florida A&M, 2-1and 5-3, at Moore-Kittles Field in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.
The Aggies move to 17-32 overall and 12-15 in league play.
A&T trailed 2-0 through five innings in Game 1. Sophomore Tony Mack drew a lead-off walk to start the sixth before sophomore Cameran Brantley smacked a double deep enough into left field to score Mack from first, putting the Aggies on the board. Junior infielder Justin Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Brantley, the tying run, over to third with only one out, but two ground outs later, the inning ended.
Brantley led the Aggies offensively with his 1-for-3 line that included the double and RBI. A&T could not muster anything in the seventh to tie the game.
Junior Ethan Chavis (1-4) was pinned with the loss but put together a stellar start going 6.0 innings and allowing two runs, both unearned, on five hits with four strikeouts.
The Rattlers scored both of their runs in the second inning. With two outs, freshman Adam Haidermota hit a ground ball to Mack at second base. A fielding error allowed Haidermota to reach safely, bringing in senior Seyjuan Lawrence from third. With runners at the corners, freshman JD Tease lined an RBI single through the left side to make it 2-0.
In Game 2, A&T jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mack drew a lead-off walk and stole second before advancing to third on a dropped strikeout at the plate that forced a throw to first. Junior outfielder Justin Rodriguez beat out an infield single to second base to score Mack, but Williams lined out to end the frame.
Both teams went scoreless until the fourth inning when FAMU put together a four-run, four-hit inning to take the lead. A double from sophomore Jared Weber sandwiched between two strikeouts led to junior Grant Rowell singling up the middle to score Weber to knot the game at 1.
Haidermota drew a walk to load the bases, and, in a pinch-hit appearance, freshman Miles Watson laced a two-RBI single through the left side. Senior Octavien Moyer followed with an RBI double before a flyout ended the threat.
A&T responded with two runs of their own in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single from Brantley, who came around to score a run himself courtesy of an error in the inning. However, that was all for A&T offensively as they stranded two runners in the frame and ending the comeback effort just short.
The Aggies will battle the Rattlers in the series finale slated for tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Moore-Kittles Field.
