TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The North Carolina A&T fell to the Florida A&M (FAMU) Rattlers, 4-1, inside Moore-Kittles Field on Friday night in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) baseball action.
"It's tough to win when you can only come up with one run," said head coach Ben Hall. "I thought Michael (Johnson) gave us a chance to win today."
Johnson (0-4) got the ball for the Aggies (7-14, 2-3 MEAC) per usual on a Friday and went 6.2 innings allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
"We just never linked enough quality at-bats together to get anything going offensively," said Hall.
A&T did string together seven hits, but they also stranded seven runners on base. The Aggies did not record an extra-base hit in the game.
Senior shortstop Dustin Baber singlehandedly compiled almost half of the A&T offensive production, going 3-for-3 with a walk in the game.
The Aggies lone run came in the visitor's sixth. Sophomore Cameran Brantley ripped a one-out single to right-center field on a 3-1 pitch, followed by freshman Trevor Sheehan singling to left field to put Aggies on first and second. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a throwing error by FAMU starter Josh Hancock.
The Hancock miscue led to a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly from freshman Connor Knapp to score Brantley and tie the game at 1. The Rattlers added a run apiece in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, with two of their RBI coming on sac flies.
An RBI double in the seventh by designated hitter Joseph Pierini scored the Rattlers run in the seventh. Johnson (0-4) did take the loss, and Hancock (3-3) earned the win after pitching six innings and striking out six.
All-conference left fielder Jared Weber paced the Rattlers (6-16, 1-0 MEAC) with his 2-for-3 performance, including an RBI and two runs scored.
"We have to make some adjustments and come out ready to play tomorrow," finished Hall.
The Aggies and Rattlers will compete in a doubleheader featuring two-seven inning games tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m.
