A&T's Offense Gets Rolling In Win Over App State

Cole Parks strikes out seven over six innings.

EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T put together an offensive explosion, besting the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 11-3, inside War Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball.

"Awesome opening day," said A&T coach Ben Hall about the Aggies home opener at #TheWar. "The weather cooperated, and we got to play in front of our home crowd. Our team played their best game so far."

A&T played at #TheWar for the first time since March 8, 2020, because the COVID-19 pandemic ended many sports seasons early.

The Aggies (2-5) returned to the nearly 100-year old park with some offensive might. They got off to a red-hot start in the bottom of the first inning, plating six runs.

A&T put together six hits in the frame, highlighted by a two-run RBI single from freshman Connor Knapp and another two-run single from sophomore Tony Mack. Knapp paced the Aggies with his 2-for-4 performance that included two stolen bases and two runs scored.

"The key to the game was our offense scoring in a bunch of ways," said Hall. "We answered their two-run inning in the sixth. Great team win."

Senior right-hander (RHP) Cole Parks provided the Aggies with a great outing on the mound. Parks (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts to pick his first win of the 2021 season.

"Cole was electric today," said Hall. "He had three pitches, and his mentality is off the charts."

A&T poured on two more runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of a sacrifice fly from freshman infielder Trevor Sheehan and a solo home run from junior infielder Justin Williams, his second of the year.

Williams finished the game with a 2-for-4 line, including his second-inning home run, two RBI and two runs scored. In total, A&T put together a season-high 13 hits to App State's seven. A&T had nine different players record a hit.

Four of those players had multi-hit games, including Knapp, Williams, Sheehan and freshman Xavier Bussey.

The Aggies will face App State one more time this week as they travel to Boone, N.C. for a 2 p.m. tussle on Tuesday, March 2, at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
